Sort of vintage.

Hi guys,

I was looking for a watch that I could just throw on and go when I’m in a hurry. So battery would be the go.
I was looking at something quartz when I came across this digital gold plated omega. Comes with box papers all the original gear. Pretty good condition too.
Snagged it for $450 aud. Not all that much really.

anyone else got something like this?

A really nice piece of cool retro!
I thought it was a cool piece that’s part of a time of uncertainty for all watch companies. Omega I guess, embraced the new quartz fad and started producing them on a large scale. My father in law has one of these too. His was new and barely used.

It's nice that is a full box but personaly i will look for a stainless steel version.

Yeah I was like that too but there is something about a cheesy gold plating that goes with this watch.

What are the functions?

Edit: Looks like we could call it a "root beer" 😁

It matches your avatar. Very cool

What are the functions?
Time in 12/24hr, day/week/month calendar, light.

simple as far as functions go for today but it needs 2 batteries to run it so I don’t think they could have done much more without the risk of changing them every few months. Loving the 70’s/80’s vibe of it.

Growing up in the 70s, I had a Texas Instruments or Casio gold LCD watch with a tritium backlit display, so it didn't drain the battery viewing the display at night. Maybe one of the batteries is for the light?

I don’t think so, the manual said that excessive backlighting will drain the batteries. Plural. So I think the two just run the lot. Thirsty V8 powered thing it is.

Hi there, great buy! These seem to be quite rare and unheard of. I have one of these models with the 1616 movement, which belonged to my late grandfather. It sat in a drawer for about 20 years, until my grandmother gifted it to me a couple of years ago. I had the (two) batteries changed by a local jeweller, but two of the case buttons had become seized over time. The quartz “movement” itself, and light button (and light itself) were functional, though.

I have recently sent it off for repairs, via Omega Boutique in Martin Place, Sydney. None of the staff there had ever seen this model before and commented on the obscurity factor. I was quoted a minimum of close to $800, but this watch is sentimentally special to me, so it’s worth it, in my eyes. The plating on mine is very worn, and the crystal shows some scratching and damage. It’s seemingly been sent from Omega Melbourne to Bienne, Switzerland. Hopefully they can refurbish the case and still have replacement crystals available.

That's one really cool Omega! What caliber does it feature?

Here's something quite similar. A memomaster with a cal. 1632

Somehow the price of these never seems to drop to scrap value.
I did finally get a Nat Semi watch to keep My Fairchild watch company.

My mentor said in the 1970s there were over 20 watch manufactures in the silicon valley in the 1970s. They though quartz crystal watches would be the next calculator. One which he had used plastic gears and a funky dial. Eventually TI and Casio cornered both the calculator and watch markets.

It features a cal 1616. It’s a fun watch. Yours looks pretty cool. Seen a couple on eBay but they were either broken or in poor condition.

Thanks so much! At present, it seems to be heading to (or at) Omega in Bienne, awaiting the necessary restoration/refurbishment. So far, the ETA is February 2024. I am very eager for it to come back for many more years of enjoyment!
