So, tell me about swapping my Rolex dial

This thread has me thinking about swapping out the champagne dial in my Date to a blue one. I see many vendors online-- any recommended place for sourcing? Or should I go to the Rolex boutique?

Given the Rolex attitude to a/supplying parts or b/contributing to the fabrication of frankenwatches, you will almost certainly meet with no results either at a Rolex Boutique, or with Rolex. I suspect aftermarket will be where you’ll have to go. eBay?

Actually, Rolex (RSC, not the boutique) would be happy to swap your dial for a fee. They keep the original, of course, and the model numbers must be the same and available for sale at one time. They may change your hands too depending on the dial type... so if you have tritium patina on hands that you enjoy, you may never see 'em again.

Sourcing of genuine dials would be difficult, which is why RSC would probably be the best route.

I wonder if Rolex policy on dial changes is uniform. A friend wanted the dial on his wife’s Lady-Date changed to a dial she preferred. Rolex Canada refused.

Do you think RSC would change the dial in my Explorer II for the new ceramic Daytona?

No. They only made adjustments that are within the model number. So you can get a 16710 coke or black bezel if it was within your model, but not Pepsi unless it was offered at the time. You can get dials that where offered at the time for your model but not custom dials ( unless you pay a lot)

My wife wanted a green dial for her birth year datejust. We kept the champagne original and had a custom green made. Looks amazing.... it’s worthless outside of her personal enjoyment

That doesn't even make any sense. What would you do with the chronograph subdials with no hands?

They deny if it wasn't originally offered with the same reference number. For example, if she had a steel Date, she can't get a dial that was only offered with a two-tone originally, even if it's pretty much the same watch.

/[sarcasm]

Rolex takes each model they produce very seriously and any minor modification (ie: changing spec bracelet for a strap) is entirely out of the question.

If you take it to any Rolex Service Center, they’ll change your dial. Mine cost me $525 CDN. It has to be a dial colour that was available on the model in question. If it’s a Date, they’ll likely have the blue dial for it. I got mine serviced at the same time. I’m really glad I did it. It really like the blue dial. ::psy::
