My recently-ex Apple watch.

I bid and won it in a charity auction because it was the only thing that interested me.
I spent an hour trying to set it up and sync it to my iPhone. Gave up as it just got to be a PITA.
Gave it to my grand daughter, she had it up and running in about five minutes.

Any watch I happen upon that might become a “least favourite” doesn’t become part of my collection. Having been collecting for many decades, it is not uncommon for me to have a watch given to me by someone who just wants to get rid of it. It becomes part of an “accumulation” of watches that I often don’t like. It will never be considered one of my “collection”. But if I like it, it will be added to the collection.

This one that was given to me, for several reasons:
1. Never wore it, it’s so damn ugly, never even took the protector off the crystal.
2. Never even heard of the brand.
3. Hasn’t even run since day 1, and it too crappy to bother with looking into why.

I kind of like that, I’m not sure I’d wear it but I do enjoy staring at all the moving parts.

How about I show you one of three that I got for free. Two of them I disliked so much I put them in a cabinet with hundreds of scrap watches. The one I liked turned out to be one of many favourites. After a while, I came back to the subject watch, and it occurred to me that with some research, some sweat labor, and a hand-made cannon pinion, it could be turned in to one I might quite like. Private label, key-wind, key-set, sterling case, sterling chain (weighs 66 grams), date circa 1884, for a Liverpool England retail jeweller, Stewart Dawson. I have three English key winders, and I don’t as a rule collect them. But this one went from the outhouse to the penthouse!

I love that story by the way. I like the idea of revisiting a watch that you might have ignored just to find that it stands out as a nice piece. It obviously helps that you have the talent and skills needed to clean/service/restore a watch that someone else might have seen as a project not worth spending money on.

No tips from anyone. My Olympus Pen camera I’ve had for years. And my portable “mini photo studio”.

I bought it new when it came out in 2004, supposedly as a limited edition inspired by the Kirovskie model from 1943. But it instead prompted the brand to come up with a whole range of reissues of this historic watch, most of them a lot more faithful to the original than mine is. Add to that a pretty shoddy construction (the bracelet and its end pieces rattle like no other watch I've ever seen, including vintage ones) and a general design I've grown tired of, and you get a watch that I no longer wear at all. And it being Russian doesn't help change my mind these days.

It's still with me because I could never be arsed to sell it, knowing that I wouldn't get much out of it anyway. But I'm thinking about listing it on a French language forum and see if anyone is interested.
It’s a nice looking watch though.

It’s a nice looking watch though.
It can be at first glance, and that's precisely why I bought it. It was pretty cheap, looked quite distinctive, and the history being it was interesting. But once on the wrist, you start noticing all the corners that have been cut and how utterly cheap and half baked this watch is in real life.

Bucherer Railroad Special. Actually not a bad watch, but it was my first "gateway drug" PW purchase leading to dozens of Waltham, Hamilton and Illinois models.
