I bought this dial below in December '16, I wouldn't rate it much weaker than the 3k $ one, I payed 1100$, probably would have gone up to 1700 because ..I was in need. But a tripling within 3 months? Who needs that, who is willing to afford this evolution in the short and mid term?

Jeez, nice watch...

Do you think this is some new phenomenon? It's not like the current market for Speedmasters has invented the swapping of parts.

I don't think this is a new phenomenon at all, but I think it is a bit rich collectors complaining about the rise in part prices when they are creating the demand that is causing the rise.

if you use actual original correct parts, is it really not "correct"? are we chasing ghosts at this point?

That is very much dependent on your viewpoint and ethical stance. A museum curator would probably argue that putting a DON bezel from a 1967 watch onto a 1966 watch was worse than leaving the incorrect bezel there, because in a strict pursuit of preserving provenance the incorrect bezel is truer to that watch.

Look, while people are free to do as they please with their possessions, it's interesting to consider that the demand would not exist or at least be minimal if they were conserving or preserving these pieces. However, most are engaging in restoration at best and renovation at worst, with the aim of making them look nicer on their wrists, thus destroying some or all of the very provenance that supposedly attracted them to the watch in the first place.

I do not have the knowledge to provide an answer based on the provenance and condition of the watch, but irrespective the first question I would ask you is about the context of your purchase. Do you just want one nice vintage Speedmaster to wear, either alone or part of a broader modern collection, or are you wanting this as the first piece of a serious vintage collection you are starting?
I guess people buy watches both old and new for a million different reasons. I hope my motives are noble . By that I mean I don't intend to ever sell it. I guess to answer your question, yes I want one 'nice' vintage speedmaster, that I can wear in rotation with my other watches. I am drawn to the '67 because I have a '67 Omega Geneve, that belonged to my grandfather, and there seemed to be a certain symmetry. but I would be happy to get a later watch with an 861 movement, if everything was correct and it had a nice patina. I have a feeling that the 1967 speedmaster we are talking about is not to be, as I have gotten no response to my emails. Incidentally I was in town yesterday on work and tried on a new speedmaster!

What do you guys think of this piece?

It's better to start a new thread and include your thoughts on the watch.
