Sending watches away for service

Not to an authorized service center, talking mailing vintage watches to an independent watchmaker for service. Not something I’ve ever done before, have always used someone local. Build up that relationship, all of that. But with so many things closed, I’m hearing more and more about people doing this, wondering if it will help me find that unicorn watchmaker, with decent prices and amazing attention to detail worth the extra cost and headache of mailing watches in.

Curious to hear experiences, who people are using in the US, how it’s gone, all that.

Thanks!

So no one’s doing this, or no one wants to give up the location of their unicorn...?

Based on previous threads, I could have predicted there would be crickets. People aren't going to give their watchmaker's contact info in a searchable forum. You need to do it by PM.

I just sent a Seamaster Professional 2254.50.00 to Nesbit's in Seattle. I've heard good things about them.

Ok. I’ve mentioned my local watchmakers many times over the years, happy to give them business, but I respect if others aren’t comfortable doing that. If anyone feels more comfortable PM’ing me, I’d appreciate it.

Just to give one example why someone might not want to post information publicly. My watchmaker has enough business and he is selective in taking on new customers. But we have known each other for a long time and we have done each other various favors over the years, so if I referred someone, he would probably be inclined to accommodate. The last thing I want is for some stranger to contact him and say "I got your name from Dan". And then to be a pain in the ass. Yes, he's a big boy and he can take care of himself, but it would still be embarrassing to me.

Almost all of my business is shipped in, except for a very few locals around me.

It’s very common to ship watches for servicing.
