Seamaster - Wedding gift advice - resizing/spring bars

Hello, I'm planning to give my partner a watch as a surprise for our wedding in a few weeks. I already know the watch he wants - https://www.omegawatches.com/watch-omega-seamaster-diver-300m-co-axial-41-mm-21230412001003 - and I want to surprise him, but I am a bit clueless so I'm hoping you can take pity on me and offer some advice!

As it’s a surprise and I am planning to give it to him shortly before the wedding (as in, a couple of days before), I am hoping that if it needs links removing to fit his wrist he will be able to do that himself as he already fiddles around with the straps on the watches he currently owns. Am I wrong to assume he will be able to do it himself? Is doing that himself going to invalidate the Omega warranty?

He is also into NATO straps and I’ve just read something about needing a spring bar or pin to install a NATO strap (which I’ve only just realised he may need), do I need to buy that for him specifically for the watch model, or may he have some already that may fit from one of his other watches? Are they standard parts? If I need to source them how do I do that?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Welcome to OF!

If you buy a NATO strap from omega apparently they give you a tool to change the strap too. No worries there. As for size you need to check the lug size of the watch. I think the NATO straps come slightly larger than the lug size intended. Might be wrong.

I think he will be able to handle the link changing business, but I rarely bother with bracelets so maybe some other experienced member can add onto this. And no it won't void warranty. Actually there has been some posts on this forum about boutiques messing up & scratching lugs and such when members took their watches to have their bracelet changed and whatnot. So, if he is a careful guy, might be better that he does it himself.

Bracelets are not the easiest to self remove if you do not know what you are doing. If you have concerns when you buy it, have them put the nato strap on it, or go to your nearest boutique as denoted on Omegas website and they can swap it for you so he can wear it immediately and then go in to have it resized. The OB will have the correct OMEGA nato if you want a nice fancy one. Otherwise it takes a standard 20mm nato strap that can be found almost anywhere online. If the strap does not have springbars with it, you only need 20mm springbars that can be found on amazon for cheap or for free from a Boutique.

The bracelet is adjusted using screws that secure a pin. They have a thread lock on them from the factory, so are a bit hard to unscrew at first. But it can be done by someone at home with the proper screwdriver and some patience. Using a hair dryer to warm the screw will unlock the thread as well. I’ve adjusted my bracelet a few times, and it isn’t that difficult at all.

Regarding the NATO strap. The spring bar holes on the lugs of this watch are quite close to the case to fit the bracelet properly. I have found that with thicker NATO straps, like the ones sold by Omega, you cannot use the spring bar from the bracelet, as there is not a large enough gap for the strap. You can try to force it, but that will put excess pressure on the bar, and it will possibly break. Omega sells curved spring bars for this, and if you buy the strap at a boutique, they will also install these bars with it. ADs may or may not (mine knew nothing about this until I explained it to them).

As others have said, if you expect your partner to want to wear it on a NATO and you live near a boutique, you might want to go there and have them swap it out. They can then later adjust the bracelet as well.
