Seamaster vs Submariner - opinions

Hi All,

so I'm putting together a watch collection.

I currently have:
omega seamaster 2254.50
omega speedmaster mark iv automatic (1974)
omega speedmaster mark ii (2015)

I'm seriously looking at adding a new watch to my collection. I'm thinking of a rolex submariner, but it looks almost identical to my seamaster and is about four times the price. I'm not wild about the polished links in the bracelet and the 40mm case size feels a bit small.

I was also looking at the rolex GMT Master II - but the dial looks very cramped and the shiny bracelet is very off putting. The Omega Planet Ocean GMT looks a much classier alternative.

One thing that stands out though is that even second hand, Rolexes are sometimes more than brand new, so as an investment, the Rolex seems a sound option.

Rolex vs Omega. Any opinions?

Paul

I've owned 2 Rolex submariners in the 90's. I got great deals in that era off Barry Chiswell who ran Ostranders in Fairview Mall, Kitchener. If I were you And I had the funds available I would try it out. If you really have to. But get it with the date. Now me today I'm older now and not so ready to have that much dollars well todays prices crazy on my wrist. I really couldn't resist the super great prices I got in the 90's. At todays prices thou ...meh...more devalue now if you buy new and sell...But thats me now.

However, I've tried it on, it looks and feels a bit slight on my wrist - .

Have you considered the sea dweller? You say the sub feels slight but later you said 43.5 is too chunky, is it ok for me to surmise that you want a thicker watch, not a larger radius?

If so then the dweller is your sweet spot. If you are worried about depr, then buy one from 2014 and avoid it, Rolex makes enough of them for all of us.

you want an oversize Rolex that looks like a sub? you can get Rolex Deepsea. I believe 44mm.

also about Rolex appreciation and Omega depreciation: already said but depends on the model. plenty of cheap datejusts and brand-new datejusts sell with almost as much discount as a comparable Omega in GM.

Deep sea is a bit too big according to the op. (He thinks 43.5 is too "chunky") the deep sea is a mammoth beast. Neat, but quite large.

Also I agree with everyone that buying new timepieces is almost always a poor investment. So go vintage OP!! 馃槈

I can't believe this thread. Both watches look different. One is a rolex and the the other an omega. What is there to discuss. Buy the one which you like more. Simple.

And what would be the point of the Internet if everyone thought like that. Pull yourself together!

Tudor Sub 79190

No vintage premium (modern design = sapphire crystal, click bezel), no Rolex stigma, and hey you have painted indices. Blue color will complement your Sword Hands.

Prices are not crazy yet and similar to your Sword Hands. A thick leather strap will give it better wrist presence.

Or, at this price, why not get yourself a used Black Bay?

Good luck finding one, a nice one is going to be just as expensive as my 14060M..

OP - I think you should do it. Both brands make great watches and I'm happy I have both. My sub was worth every penny.

If you don't have a rolex. Go ahead and scratch the itch. Believe me there is no stigma attached to the rolex. If you care about what people think about your ways choice then you really need to please others not yourself.

Btw a tudor black bay heritage is an excellent watch and really good value for money.

The solution is very simple - buy both.
Genious! that way you can look at both in the evening and ask yourself the question which is better? 馃槈

Yes there is. You can choose to ignore it or you can embrace it but it's there

Completely agree with both- You have to end up buying it for yourself, but there is a stigma

A bit of a paradox:
Some buy the Rolex because they care that people see that they have a Rolex

Some won't buy the Rolex because they care that people think that they're just a douchebag who wants to be seen wearing a Rolex (those dudes absolutely exist)

So in the end, to thine own self be true.
Buy the one that you can't stop smiling at.

Have not noticed the signs of any stigma myself but it really depends which company one likes to keep 馃榾

I have a few in my collection. Purely bought them because i wanted them. I certainly don't buy things to show others. I really don't need to.

However i would not stop the opinion of others determine how i choose to spend my hard earned money.

You like a rolex. Buy it.

Not just the douche thing, which absolutely does exist...I'm sure it does with other watches too, but it's a particular thing with Rolex people who have bought into the marketing hook, line, and sinker. These tend to not be true watch people though.

But the most common question I was asked when I used to wear a Rolex regularly was "Is it real?" After a while, I admit that gets tiring to hear, and it was never a question asked when I wore a JLC, Blancpain, or any other brand. Of course I could choose to "keep different company" but that would have required quitting my job at the time. I remember being in a lunch meeting with a business owner once while negotiating the purchase of several 6 axis robots from his company, and while the conversation wandered to other topics after the business discussion was over, he went on a rant about the guys who wear Rolex showing off. This despite the fact that his customer was sitting right across from him wearing a Rolex, and not showing it off...that one I thought was pretty funny, and no I didn't point it out...and yes we still bought from them and the transaction was smooth.

I am now lucky enough to work for myself now and I can keep the company I want to, but that is not realistic for everyone at every time of their life...

Rolex is a good mid-level watch brand, just like Omega. In the grand world of horology, neither are anything terribly special, and certainly not anything worth arguing about.

Cheers, Al

Should add a balanced view.

You like an omega buy it. Listen to the heart not the views of others

Never to this day has anyone asked me the question " is it real?" Again it boils down the company one keeps. Would I be rude to ask one of my colleagues whether their AP or PP is real? Ofcourse not. Because I know that if they care to wear a watch, its for their pleasure and not for the pleasure of others.

I think you sum it nicely. Both are decent Swiss watches and not worth arguing about. 馃榾

To each their own. A bit OT but Here are my GMT hand twins:

But in fact I prefer the PO shown below to both those above, the glossy dial on the Rolex, relatively poor lume and intrusive crystal glare are all relative fails for the Rolex, though the 3186 movement is a win vs the slightly fragile modular one Omega use for the SMP-GMT:
