Seamaster De Ville Buying Advice

Gday All,

First time poster, newbie to the world of Seamasters. Finding an absolute wealth of advice on this forum.

I’ve found a local seller of a 1963 Seamaster De Ville in what I think to be the 18K (?) livery.

I’d like to visit it in person but kinda wanna get my ducks in a row first, facts on the watch so far:
  • was a gift to the owners father (has a 1963 personal dated engraving on the case back, so appears to have good provenance)
  • was serviced recently by a local Omega agent
  • unsure of Cal yet - hoping to get some details on which one when I visit
  • some evidence of light corrosion on the very top of the dial
  • no strap (not a biggie)

The gentleman is asking a fairly premium price for it ($1800 AUD = $1150 US), but I’m not sure what these gold examples in this type of condition command? I’ve seen the steel cases, in very good condition, normally around the $1000-1200 AUD mark.

Am i asking all the right questions?
Anything else I should consider prior to having an inspection?

Cheers in advance!

The condition is what I would consider quite poor. Moldy water-damaged dial, distracting scratches on dial, soft case, missing lume in hands. I wouldn't bother with it.

I fully agree with @Dan S and would not bother with it.

Gold or not, serviced or not, the condition is poor and, unless the inscription relates to someone really famous, it reduces rather than enhances the value.

You really need to look at more of these to get a feel for price and condition - and servicing varies depending upon the ability of the servicer.

Have a look here on private watch sales thread, on eBay (currently offered and sold items) and Chrono24 or other auction sites familiar to you.
