Seamaster 300 was stolen today

The gym doesn’t have cameras in the locker room. The person used my debit card at a local electronics store so they do have him on those cameras. I didn’t have insurance which is another stupid decision on my end. No ones ever accused me of being smart.
Renters and homeowners insurance would cover some of it if not all.

I think it is even higher than 95%. Humanity would have self-destructed a long time ago if 5% part of the population were "bad" people. 😲😵‍💫
For example, the incarceration rate of my birth country of Canada is about 88 per 100,000 population, or 0.088%. (Of course, not all bad people end up losing their liberty...)

I agree that most people want to follow good social rules most of the time, but there are countless examples of "societies" self-destructing because of a lack of "rule-following" not just at the large scale of the Roman Empire or USSR or Civil War United States (Nazi Germany?), but also in smaller scale social organizations (corporations: Enron, Worldcom).

social conventions can also break down due to local events: the Rodney King Riots and George Floyd riots are great examples, with many participants that otherwise are probably law-abiding good people breaking the law either because of mob mentality or because they believed their actions were justified because of bad actions. Ironically, the events that set off those riots are great examples of what we could call "socially normalized bad behavior."

If anything I would argue that it is not humanity's inherent "good or bad" qualities that make us successful, but our ability to organize into societies and normalize and define what we find acceptable good/bad actions.

There's usually very limited coverage for jewelry and watches unless there's an additional rider purchased to cover them.

I agree. Every civilization has a "social contract" to which people create, either from leaders (elected or unelected) or by referendums (e.g. Switzerland) for people and governments to abide to. So, referring to the 5% mentioned by @gbesq, it raises questions about the sustainability of that society. A significant portion of the population disregarding the agreed-upon rules and norms could undermine the stability and cohesion of the social fabric. What is the threshold? 5%? 10%? 1%?

No most politicians, religious leaders and captains of industry and other scumbags that are pillars of the community ( maybe I should rephrase that… how about pillocks of the community ), they manage not to end up incarcerated

Yeah, unfortunately, gyms aren't responsible unless it's an employee or they were grossly negligent, such as by allowing someone to walk right by the front desk carrying a bolt cutter. Same goes for coat checks in restaurants and clubs if they charge for that service; but if they provide them free of charge, they're not responsible except for inside jobs and/or gross negligence, such as leaving them unlocked and unattended. Gyms are also responsible if the locker was accessed through some defect, regardless of what their signs say, which isn't that uncommon in gyms, at all. You always need to check to make sure that the side and rear panels are intact, because you'd be amazed at how often they aren't, such as when there are enough screws missing on the rear panels or on the side walls that neighboring lockers share for someone to stick a hand through the resulting gaps. They can't put put cameras in there unless they post very prominent signs alerting people about them, in which case, they'd also need to provide a separate off-camera changing area, which isn't very practical, although I've seen that once or twice in my 3 decades training in gyms before I built my own gym in my apartment (posting in between sets, right now, as a matter of fact). But between the cameras in the gym and in the places where he used your cards, there's probably a pretty good chance of ID'ing him, at least. On the rare occasion that I train in a commercial gym these days, I either wear my watch and keep my wallet (etc.) in the pockets of my cargo shorts or I lock my shit up in those lockers outside the dressing rooms that are on camera, such as those that Planet Fitness gyms often provide. I've pretty much always worn my watches in gyms, anyway, except for back in the day when I used to tape my wrists because I used crazy weights.

I genuinely hope this isn't true. We all make mistakes, and although costly, this doesn't even rank highly on the "stupid" scale. Your locker was locked.

Sorry to hear this happened to you.

I'm so sorry OP. This is just such a violation. Particularly for the gym, I know my work outs are a bit of a "safe time" for me. But I also want to echo the sentiment above. Putting a watch in a locker with a lock is not a crazy thing to do. I'd have assumed my watch was safe too. You also weren't flashing a gold date just, either. Just like when I travel with sports watches, I think nothing of popping them in the hotel room safe. Don't beat yourself up or even put shadow blame on yourself. You're the victim, who was doing something reasonable.

Let me supply another take, a sort of variation on the 80/10/10 rule: if 10% of people are "good" and 10% of people are (err...) "bad," and that leaves a huge number of people in between those extremes that are various shades of gray with various willingness to steal if they think they can get away with it.

Edit: also, I have to add that population distribution is not random or "even;" populations tend to Cluster based on behavior, interest, income, &c &c.
