Hello Folks

Had a look at a "barn find" Seamaster 165.024 today. Unfortunately it seems it was at the bottom of a bucket in the barn.

The crown won't pull out. The bezel is locked in place and there clearly been a pretty significant ingress of water into the movement.

First sign of trouble was the hour hand which looks like a flaming sword. There some flaming red rust at the base of the hand though it is obscured by the minute hand.

The rest of the dial doesn't look too bad other than some signs of rust in between the 1 and 2 marks on the dial with the lume plot at 2 taking some damage.

Then the horror show begins.

Now you can see where that rust color is coming from.. the movement.

at least the caseback is okay.

The question is can it be saved? I know the wizards of the world can work real magic.. and I have a great watchmaker. I would hate to declare it dead. I would also hate to have to swap the movement entirely.

I like a good project but this seems rather daunting.

That will buff right out. :whipped: Sorry couldn’t help myself. But you’re right it will be a long hard road. I’d save myself the pain and source a movement.

I don't know about necessarily getting a complete movement... the brass parts don't rust. The wheels themselves are brass, only the pinions are steel.

Now, mind you, with Al saying that parts are a lot more expensive than they used to be, a donor might not be a bad idea, but then you have another whole issue of what is worn out in the donor movement?

For those of you who collect these things, how much would it be worth once everything was fixed up?

It looks as if the water has entered through the crown. You can see the stem is badly rusted. To be completely honest, I don’t think this looks that bad. I have serviced much worse without donor watches. Parts are more expensive but wheels for these are still ‘relatively’ cheap and the center wheels usually need changing anyway.

if you look at the steel components - ratchet wheel, crown wheel, screw heads and regulating assembly - they don’t look rusted.

You are going to lose some of the plating on the auto weight but such is life. The problem you will run into with a donor watch is that train wheel pivots will most likely be worn. If they aren’t too bad then they could be burnished but if they are bad they will have to be replaced anyway. Remember, donor movements aren’t usually the prairie examples, they are the crap that gets sold off for parts.

Just my two cents.

Ashton

You absolutely do not need a donor movement. This watch is really quite fine. I haven’t seen under the dial, of course, but based on these pics you’ve not got much to worry about.

A lot of the rust is just sitting on non-ferrous parts where it settled, so it's likely that most of the parts will clean up very well. I was expecting much worse after reading your post. I would absolutely give it a shot.

That crap is good for one thing only... water displacer. Then you clean it off with anhydrous alcohol.

I believe it's worth disassembling the movement and putting it through the ultrasonic. It does not look too bad. You may need some new hour and minute hands.

It is currently in the hands of Mr. Freese here in the UK. I will keep you updated.

The hands pose another challenge altogether!

Wow!! I think when I will be rusty and older I'll go to the Freese spa too 😀
It's always a nice surprise when you open the Extract and see such a cool origin!
