Agreed. A lot to unpack there, less demand....stagnant prices...all point to shift in market. The EW could be a precursor to broader impact....is it noise or signal?

ohhh yes the bubble will burst again like every summer since years ....

people do just consolidation and sell their pieces to step one level up or take a nice profit .... as @kov said the collector pieces do not show up here or on the bay they change hands privately and fetch good prices.

especially for ed whites more and more people see it's not the ultimate speedy as there are way more bigger goals out there, the general hype flatted a bit

I get the impression some are 'cashing out' while the market is good. Too many reasons some people may need to raise cash, and when that Speedy you paid $1,200 for 6 years ago is now worth $20k, it's hard to think you will be better off keeping it tucked away until it becomes worth even more.

I'm curious if we generally see a bump in sales listing when there's a significant increase on sold pricing of certain references on Sp101.com.

where should this increase come from when only average pieces are sold ? and the price list makes partly no sense

Interesting talk on here...

I got out of Speedies to take profits to buy my DRSD, and I have not looked back. Based on discussions I've had with other collectors, many are doing the same - they are moving Speedies, often times duplicates or similar references, to fund other watches.

A lot of it is the natural ebb and flow of collecting - I was a hardcore Omega guy, and am now more into Rolex...my Omegas may get worn once a month, and even then, not for an entire day.

The game has gotten so expensive, unless you have a ton of disposable income, the only way to fund new purchases is to sell a watch.

I have gotten to the point in my collecting that I will pay a premium for a premium example, and am no longer bargain hunting...it was the bargain hunting that got me where I am today.

I'm not trying to talk to the pricing aspect - as I read the sp101 site, it's for SpaceFruit's use (but he's happy to share), and he observes known sold prices - and I'm very grateful for that.

What I was curious of, is whether we see an increase in the number of listed watches, that correspond with an update to sp101.

I think it’s tough to say there’s a general trend based on the dog days of summer - this is not “watch season” as some on here have christened parts of the the fall/winter.

If things trend down in the fall, then it will be clearer. There are more Ed Whites for sale because there is signicantly more Ed Whites out there, and their prices are more attainable. I don’t foresee a sudden dearth of interest in 321 Speedmasters or straight lugs....

I think the price list is probably fine. The problem is that most sellers don't know what "GOOD" means.

That's an interesting question, but if so, then it must be driven by a threshold. Having watched the sp101 price chart increase update over update for several years, I can say that prices have risen dramatically, but those increases never resulted in a run (that I know of).. So is it just a matter of a threshold being exceeded? Maybe... or is it just the normal ebb and flow? Probably.

Some of you OF youngsters missed the best run though when Barking Mad sold off a bunch. A one man market flood! Fun times!

Do you mean the lust price of watches for sale makes no sense or the price list on sp101 makes no sense?

This is key. You see so many Speedmasters listed at near or above good when in reality they should be around running.

Two of the watches that are listed belong to me. The reason I’m selling is because as pointed out by @ulackfocus about a month ago, I have too many of the same type watch. Majority of my watches were purchased when I was very new to collecting.

My taste are actually starting to mature and have taken a slightly different path. While I love vintage and the varying degree of patina that each individual watch can take, I all too often will pick something modern out of my watch case (Specifically DSoTM Black Black). Add to that I have three incoming modern watches (Ultraman, Daytona LN, Seiko Presage) I cant justify having watches that are just sitting, when I could sell and free up cash.

Another point I would like to address, often I’ve seen prices listed and presumably sold for more than the chart on SM101. As pointed out, that is a chart create by William to track watches that he knows the selling price, for his personal use. It is a guide not a bible for prices, head only and you need to factor in a service. Maybe we have reached a point where the chart has finally caught up to the actual market today, maybe not.

Thanks for your candor and input @Atalien2005 , it helps put things in clearer perspective. I too share both your and @watchknut sentiment where my collection started many years ago with Omega but since has evolved to include other brands, Rolex / Heuer / misc. I find it much less satisfying chasing that next perfect 105.003, 105.012, Flightmaster versus looking for a nice Red Sub, 5513 or Zenith Daytona. It's a fact of life, with age and knowledge tastes evolve. And as pointed out, with the ever increasing values, purging is now a necessary evil to accommodate this evolution.

What sucks is when you've run out of shit to sell to fund future purchases.

After this next round of blood letting, the watches that are on the block are a gilt 1675, 5513, and two SM300s...none of which I want to let go of...

First world problems, buddy....but I hear you, I'm there as we speak! Case in point, had to let go of a BNIB Daytona Ceramic to fund the Zenith 16520. I figured, I can always buy back the modern Daytona at some point in the future, but not so much when it comes to vintage Daytona's.

What sucks is when you've run out of shit to sell to fund future purchases.

I'm in a similar boat. I realized recently that I hadn't even considered wearing my Speedmaster for the past several weeks, if not longer. Every time I look in the watch box, I end up pulling out a modern dive watch. I've found that I form a much stronger bond with these watches since I take them with me on dive trips and other adventures. I buy watches to wear, and vintage pieces just don't get enough wear to justify keeping.

Also, unlike many who have been collecting for a long time, I really don't have many pieces to sell off to fund other purchases--watches and otherwise (mainly otherwise lately... dive gear is expensive 😲). I'm only looking to pass the watch on to another collector at a fair price.
