Rolex gold spring bars: overkill, or a smart design feature?

I’ve been made aware that Rolex offers sold-gold (9K?) spring bars that are used with their 18K Day-Date models:

I”m assuming this was created to minimize wear to the lug holes on the softer gold cases. I’ve done a search and read a lot about whether this is really necessary, and the jury is still out: some seem to think it’s a good feature on a watch that uses a strap, and is worn a lot; while others think if it’s on a bracelet, and used infrequently, they’re not needed. What’s your take?
