As the thread states, I am looking for birth year watches for my parents, possibly as Christmas gifts. What would be the models I would be targeting?

Rolex Prince 1940 and a Datejust for 1946 maybe?

I’m interested in what real vintage Rolex experts suggest.

Bubbleback Oyster models are the first thing that comes to mind, and I'm pretty sure that they were made in 1946, but they may not go back to 1940. There were also the "Air" models, Air-King, Air-Giant, Air-Tiger. Again, they may not go back to 1940, you'll have to check. For 1940, you may be looking at a generic Oyster model.

As @many mentioned, the rectangular Prince models are also interesting, but not to everyone's taste.

My mom's born in 1945, and she's got a seiko tank for the longest time.

Recently I got her this and she's over the moon.

She wears it every time we meet, you know how parents are; they love anything you get them.
