Rolex AD in Europe

So my wife and I are on vacation in Belgium/Netherlands and she has a big life event coming up for which we’d already discussed getting a Rolex. Her grandfather has daily worn one her whole life so she has an attachment to the brand. She likes the look of the Milgauss, which is my favorite Rolex, so I’m pumped. She mentioned that we should buy it at the boutique in Amsterdam since it would be fun to associate it with the trip. I support that but have only bought used/vintage watches for myself. Any tips/tricks for using at an AD to not get fleeced or is there any price flexibility? Is an American buying at a European AD just throwing money away unnecessarily? She’s pretty rational so I’m sure we could get a gray market or US bought watch if there’s a big price differential.

Thanks.

No price flexibility typically on steel sports Rolex models through legitimate channels - you best bet for lowest price will be duty free at the airport.

There is a Rolex AD inside Schipol, but what they have in stock varies a lot day to day.

That’s good to know. We’re flying in and out of Brussels and Munich, so I can check there.

I've not flown in/out of Brussels, but having flown in/out of Munich a lot, I'm still not sure what the deal is with ADs/Boutiques in the airport.

I think all the luxury stuff must be in the Lufthansa Terminal.

The short answer is yes.... even with the duty free gimmick at airports or the reimbursement of [a fraction] the VAT from Tax refund services before leaving Europe, you will be better off buying any Swiss-made watch in the US...unless the exchange goes 2€:1USD by the time you get there, then maybe it will be a good idea 😀

Completely agree, much cheaper to get a Rolex or Omega in the states.

Thank you all for the information, it’ll be a looking not buying trip I guess.

Sadly because you are just thinking of this now ... I’d say don’t do it. Had you shopped in the states before hand and understood price points ... you might have done better in EU since VAT is refunded. I do understand that my experience predates the tightening of supply however but I did very well on my GMT and on my JLC Master Moon.
