Restoration or sell for parts?

Hi, my father has a Omega Geneve Dynamic watch that’s in a bit of a poor state.
I’m looking for advice on whether it’s worth getting it restored or selling it as it is?
Not sure of what it would cost to restore or resell value.
The watch was bought in German (in a Naffi shop) in about 1970.
The watch itself has been in a box for about 20 years but seems to be working ok.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This thread probably needs to be in the vintage omegas section, not Omega watch reviews, but if you’re definitely going to sell it then sell it as is. There would be no point in servicing prior to selling and you won’t recoup your money. If you want to keep and use it then a service would be best.

i have the same dilemma , sometimes the sum of all parts is not greater than the parts on its own when sold, like i have a vintage watch that might probably fetch $500-600 on the market, yet if I choose to sell the dial alone it might have a value of $180-200 on its own, add the movement, then another $200, then the case, another $150, then add the bracelet for $100-150. problem is you might not be able to sell some of the parts and be stuck with them.

What's wrong with this watch, is the caseback/lug thing custom?

Even so, you're underselling it, it looks usable, there's possibly a 1000+ cal inside and the sum of its parts for that reason will likely not be greater than the watch

Not sure the strap fitting is anyway original, not sure the original glass is in place!

probably need better pictures to figure out if that strap apparatus is something that can pop off and leave the watch hopefully unaltered. Usually there is a screw ring there that holds down either a factory piece for attaching leather, or metal bracelet.

Compared to another image. Looks like someone did some filing on the back and ring for strap is missing and something added.

Doesn't look like a bracelet model, so filed piece to hold a regular strap

Can't find an image with the back and ring removed

Yes, looks like somebody cut off the outer rim of the case back which bears the grooves used to unscrew it. That case back is there to hold the ring which is attached either to the metal bracelet or the corfam strap (the case doesn't open from the back, only from the front). So that is a problem. On the other hand, the dial looks very good, but in my experience is more common than the reverse version with blue in the middle. So all in all a beautiful watch but with a big problem concerning the case back. If it had the correct one, IMO it would be worth around 450 GBP. As it is, much less, sorry.

EDIT: Sorry, I got one thing wrong: Nobody cut off anything. The watch is simply missing the screw-on ring which holds either a bracelet or a strap to the back. And there are the remnants of either a bracelet or a strap wedged in there which you could (and should) pry off.

My opinion is to sell it as it is ..you will not earn money if you will restore it and try to sell it after that..Regards.

This is the back of the bracelet model. Small middle link opening

Yep I think you're right. Hopefully whatever home made lug arrangement and strap remnants will pop off the back and if the OP is lucky the threads are intact on the back of the watch for the retainer ring. If so the watch is well worth buying a retainer ring and strap or bracelet and would be a great wearer since he says the thing runs well and it certainly looks nice from the front shot. 👍
