Hi all, I'm new to vintage manual watches and so still can't decipher what's real or not. Got this off eBay a while ago and the swill sign at the 6 o'clock position intrigued me is it missing the made word? I can't open the back to look at the movement since it is the front opening case and I don't want to mess with that, from what I read it is not easy to open. Thanks for your help. Tom
Welcome to the forum! Ah, I love auto correct sometimes. Here’s what a real swill sign should look like Sensible answers to your question will come soon but what is your plan, to repair and wear or to sell?
At first glance the dial looks strange because I am accustomed to seeing the painted minute markers extending out at least as far as the applied metal hour markers. However, perhaps there are exceptions to this.
I've been wanting to get a piece of real vintage Omega history and technology that I can enjoy wearing so if this one is not it I'd get rid of it and keep looking, thanks
While waiting for the real experts to chime in, please let me tell you what I think: I don't think the "SWISS only" is the major problem, but it looks like a redial and I would be worried about the signs of water damage that can be seen on (re)dial and hands. It is correct that this is a frontloader case and you need a good watchmaker to have checked and eventually serviced the movement. The crown is definitely not OMEGA and I've never seen before this as a replacement, which lets me think the service history is doubtable.
Thanks, that's what I gathered from my brief online search and so just wanted to confirm here before I endeavor on another watch search, this time I'll probably stay away from ebay
Looking at a genuine dial in comparison: https://omegaforums.net/threads/omega-seamaster-deville-and-sigma-dials-in-general.70562/ the OPs one looks very much like a redial: Not a sign of serifs on "De Ville" the font is also thinner Here is one with longer minute markers but "Swiss" is of course not partly hidden by the 6 maker and the minute markers are thinner and more appealing to the eye than the OPs ones.
They are! So called "Sigma" Dials I don't whats the matter with them but maybe you find more about them in the thread https://omegaforums.net/threads/omega-seamaster-deville-and-sigma-dials-in-general.70562/
Thanks guys for the quick response, looks like I'm in for a search of another watch, just found this new listing on ebay, any thoughts? https://www.ebay.com/itm/MENS-VINTA...706001?hash=item23d38729d1:g:AzgAAOSwUyZeW1YuPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
The dial seems to be more textured so I assume it's original the font in the Seamaster looks correct also, the sigma signes would indicate the hour markers should contain gold, can't tell if this is the case here, the T would possible indicate tritium used in luminous hands which would also look correct in this piece.
Looking at the case, what can you see or what do you miss when comparing to other watches of this reference?
