Just a suggestion-
A lot of you may know of the Rolex Serial number project on VRF.
Richard's posting brings to mind the usefulness of such a database
for Omega. Of course some of Omega's watches don't follow
a contiguous numbering with other References.
But maybe a Speedmaster database. A Constellation database. ect
I know this would be more work for moderation. But maybe if the
poster had an ability to add/edit only his entry, and then moderator
could review for authenticity and inclusion.
Just a thought.

The case within the 2998 series are similar. There are differences compared with the earlier 2915 and the later 105.003 straight lug cases.

As MSN mentioned there is no guarantee, that the case left the factory with this 19.xxx.xxx movement. However you never have that guarantee with those old Speedies so it makes not too big sense to hunt a certain movement number as long as it is within the possible range. The Omega museum acknowledged that the production in those times were outside Omega factory done by L茅mania at Ori猫nt and that there are no records about which movement was built to which case. It is even reported that a huge bunch of movements have been produced on stock for several years and were just fitted to the case that came along the production line. Nobody expected crazy collectors to wonder one day, if a certain movement was fitted in this or that case.

Your new old hands are definitly the better choice compared to the ones you had before. They look correct to what can be seen.
florianw - you have a nice watch, and you made the right decision with those hands: you've replaced the skinner "stick" hands that are correct for Speedmasters after the CK2998 model with "alpha" (also known as "dauphine") hands correct for the CK2998 series.

The case reference is engraved on the caseback of the watch for Omega Speedmasters. Hence, the 2998-6 you see on the back of your caseback. This system isn't perfect, since you can of course swap casebacks between Speedmasters, but your case, caseback, and movement all go together well for a credible 2998-6.

As discussed, there is no hard cutoff for which movement number goes to which case reference (2998-1, 2998-2, etc); it is more like fitting a bell curve. And while your 19x movement is toward the later tail of that curve, it is not at all outside the realm of possibility (for example, if you had a 26.xxx movement in there). So what you have is a relatively correct and complete watch, with an older dial that is correct for a -1 to -2 CK2998. This is not a bad situation to be in: you have a very visually appealing watch, and the older "domed" dial that you have is good currency that would facilitate an easy trade for you when you do encounter an owner with an older watch (a -1 or -2) that may have had a stepped (-3, -4, -5, -6, -61, -62) dial fitted to it during a routine service or repair in the early to mid 60s.

You do have the issue of the crown - but vintage crowns are relatively easy to find, and prices are typically reasonable.

cheers,
Mark

Thx for all the valuable information, guys. I apprecciate that a lot!

What crown do I need for my watch? Is it the 6mm oor 6,5 mm crown? And where can I get it. Is there any reliable part dealer for Omega? I know the vintage Rolex world very well, but feel a bit lost when it comes to Omega.

You can do that with the 1060 constellation crowns. But I think not with the vintage crowns for 2998. Pretty sure Ofrei's are modern replacements on these, with the 'modern 惟'
