·Three watches spanning nearly the entire life of a company. Formed in 1864 the National Watch Company was founded in Elgin, Illinois, in 1874 the company changed its name to the Elgin National Watch Company. The Elgin company was incredibly successful and produced approximately half of all American pocket watches during its life. Despite its success and being a fairly innovative company (producing its own American made automatic wrist watches and rail road approved wrist watches) the company succumbed to foriegn competition. In 1960 the original factory in Elgin closed its doors and in 1968, after being in business for 104 years, the company ceased production of watches and its name sold.
