I am a totally newbie and got the watch recently, appreciate any help on this. The seller said it is a watch from 1952, with a calibre 283.

I cannot read the case reference number on the caseback in the photograph. The watch looks genuine with an original dial. However, there was some re-luming done at one point. The dots in the odd numbered markers look a bit sloppy and too white.

The case is in decent shape, not over polished and the blued seconds hands is a nice extra.

When I first saw the photo I immediately thought it was a ref 2640, but that's obviously not what the case-back says. OP, can you please post a better photo of the reference number, or read it and tell us what it says?

Caseback says 2638 or 2838-8?

WOW thanks everyone for your help, the shop helped with opening the case back and I have no idea how to open it again so I have no clue how to do it.

I got the watch for around US$870, is it a reasonable price?

I would say it's a fair price. The dial seems to be textured or " hobnail" . If it's services you got your self nice deal.

I do like that dial. Nicely done. It looks even more papery than most of the other hobnails. Beautiful.
