Just got the quote from my watchmaker $650 to overhaul this watch. “Finally dawned on you guys that you were leaving cash on the table eh?” Said I. I officially revise every comment I made previously about what it costs me to overhaul a vintage chrono. They are still a bargain and 3 miles away. Of course they made a part for my large Tri Compax to solve a moon disc issue for free recently.

That’s a beauty! Enjoy it!

$650 is a solid deal. I'll have to pay nearly double here in Canada.

Nice looking watch. At least it’s not something they had to be done with great frequency but yeah the upkeep on watches is something I tend to forgot about when I’m buying on impulse.

If things get tight I can just go to disposable quartz

They are very very good. Finally charging what they should be charging. I own a lot of cranky old chronographs and two Polerouters. I need these guys to stay profitable.

There are watchbreakers and watchmakers. Watchmakers cost more.

But it does add up.

Would cost me about US$120.00 to overhaul plus parts cost if required.

$650 US is still a bargain - below the going rate I would say...

I have never regretted pricier / quality overhauls, but unfortunately a few cheaper ones. I am reminded of the mistake each time I look at those particular watches, so I am done with that for all the ones I care about.

No my Watchmaker is fully qualified and used to own a prominent high street watch making shop in my city but due to the Christchurch Earthquake had to shut up shop and as he was already close to retirement didn't reopen that bricks and mortar business but went into semi retirement working from home.
A lot of his work from days past was trade work from many jewellers/ watchmakers etc around the city and further afield.
Due to my high volume of repair work I get an extremely good price as I am by far and wide his biggest customer hence the very low rate.

That would not support any kind of business here.

Very true but the upside for me is that my collection would never have grown to anywhere near the size it is, in a way I am taking advantage of a very rare bubble.

I've been very pleased with Larry's watchmaker as well, 2 separate times. Took in my Speedmaster Mk40 about 2 months ago for an overhaul since it was new to me with no service history, and had low amplitude and resistance when manual winding. They quoted me $550, and ended up $610 since it needed a winding wheel. Not only was it completed locally in about 4 weeks, my timegrapher was essentially a flatline when I got it home!

I’d say you already won the jackpot having a high quality independent watchmaker 3 miles away. Now what do they charge for a triple date moon phase chrono? 😉

$650 = VERY good value.
I have been quoted $2200 Euro for a movement only service for a Langè chrono.
That maybe without postage and insurance.
