I think I would give up all the buying and selling for a Jacob and Co astronomia. 馃榾

Totally agree. Just got my first Seiko SNA411, can't believe the quality you get for the price, unbelievable.

While seiko's are cool and have their place for daily driver watches, a grand seiko is not really a comparison to a seiko. The precision work in their dials and hands puts them on par with any boutique watch. I think that if GS dropped their name and made a new brand that it would help their image since the level of craftsmanship in their watches is undervalued. Watchfinder did an excellent video to explain just how good their dials are.

Getting back to to the main topic, I do think that a Grand Seiko could be 1 watch end game considered by me. The new 60th anniversary limited edition comes in at a whopping $43,000 USD. People may think it's crazy and say you should get a PP Nautilus for that instead. Both brands command respect for the quality and craftsmanship, but I think that when Grand Seiko slaps a high price tag on a watch it does make you have a closer look.

That's not really the Japanese model though. In some markets, Toyota markets their high-end vehicles under another marque (Lexus) and, in the past, have marketed their lower-end under a different brand as well (Scion). In many markets they're all Toyotas. Grand Seiko has been around since the 60s but only the North American market seems to have a problem with the association. I think if the parent were to make any changes, it would be to bring the Orient brand into the Seiko family, not to further dissociate the Grand Seiko brand.

Which reminds me, I neglected to include a spring drive snowflake (SGBA211) in my one-watch collection.

(edit: Correction regarding Toyota marketing in various markets)

Grand Seiko did drop the Seiko name from their watches. It used to be

both Seiko and Grand Seiko on the Dial.

Now it's just Grand Seiko

I believe a 2254 is a do it all watch. I think I could survive on a one watch choice with that.

The problem is that when you think you have the perfect watch there's always another one that comes along and steals your heart

Always owned 2 or 3 watches so I could swap and change, but wanted a Rolex. So sold all 3 to fund my Datejust.

Managed 2 and half years with just the one, but had to add another. Not that I got bored of the datejust. I just wanted something a bit different, more robust and better waterproof.

I want to add one more as well, something like a speedy, Zenith, IWC or maybe another Breitling.

When the shops reopen I will do some hunting and trying on. This will take me back up to 3, which for me is the perfect number.

So for me the answer is to have more than one.

Oh the problem of 100m water resistance not being enough for most of us.
Some professional/scientists recreationally dove with a Datejust.

I've actually been on holiday twice with it and never took it off. Swam in the sea and pool within problems what so ever, after all it says 100m and I definitely am not going 100m.

The problem is the jumping in and out of the pool, worrying about scratching it, and although it is a very versatile watch I was not 100% on the beach look with swimming shorts.

This is the reason for a dive watch with a rubber strap.
Much better beach look....

I鈥檓 trying to limit mine to the 5 piece watch box. It鈥檚 very difficult sometimes.
Once upon a time this was my intention. But then I found out that limiting myself to one watch only makes the homework, the hunt and the use of the one and only endlessly intensive.
So I became a grail watch hunter.

Of course, a travel watch is easy to justify to protect the grail, and if the grail watch has a malfunction that cannot be repaired, not even in their own factory, well then I start the search from new again.

I believe North America is one of the few markets where Toyota markets their high-end vehicles under another marque (Lexus) ...

This is really not relevant to Seiko, but Lexus models are sold in Europe, China, and even in Japan (since 2005). You can easily verify this using Google Maps by searching for dealerships.

I think that four is the best that I could do: a chronometer, a diver, a dress watch and a beater. I'm at five currently, but I'm not selling my Speedy, my SMPc, or either one of my two vintage Constellations. So that leaves me with the beater. 馃檨

Very well, I stand corrected: In some markets, Toyota uses different branding to suit local tastes.

Some days I contemplate getting down from 4 to 1, and others mapping out 5-7. But by far the hardest thing to do is stand pat.
