I'm a new member and can't believe all the useful information I have picked up so far in these forums. Lately I have wanted to pick up a few watches from my birth year, Omega preferred, My birth year is 1947. Yea, I know, what's an old man doing looking for a 76 year old watch.

Any help on where to look, what to look out for would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks so much,

David

welcome to the forum

A good starting point would be chrono24 and altering the listings by year

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/search/i...x=true&resultview=block&sortorder=0&year=1947

I haven't looked through the results in any great detail but I can see there are a lot of redialed watches that are not worth spending money on. So if you see anything you like then be sure to ask for advice here before making the purchase.

Good luck with the search!

Agree, Chrono24 is a great research tool; eBay can be too. But I’d be wary of using either site for an actual purchase. Definitely post pictures and links here first—the vintage gurus here will help immensely.

But if at all possible buy from a trusted vintage dealer in your home region or from a private seller here.

Welcome to the forum, you should browse the forum for inspiration, look at the thread “learn how to fish”, and look at the sales forums.

I would not recommend trusting Chrono24 or Ebay— but Ebay is interesting to monitor auctions - and to see the prices for already sold items.

Both sites are full of crooks and faulty watches - and the asking prices on Chrono24 are often outlandish.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 76 year old wanting to buy a nice watch. In fact I think it's a great idea.

I had a look at some of the previous sales here (watches from 1947), so these should give you a few ideas:

The Omega Enthusiast website is worth looking at- there are a large number or choices listed by year and you can get a feel for what you like and learn what is available. Prices are higher than what you find on the Private Sales thread here on OF, but they are all serviced and nicely presented. He is located in Toronto area and also has a lot of informative youtube videos.

Welcome to the old guys thread.
I'm about to join you as a 76 year old.
Luckily I have a 1947 Omega.
I also have a number of Omegas and other watches that cover most years from 1906 to 2023 😁.

Welcome to OF drose224 from a fellow Pennsylvanian. You have received good advice from many other members. As already noted, Chrono24 and eBay are good places to search for specific model years and references and they can be very good places to purchase a watch if you know what you are looking for, how to identify the bargains from the junk, and what constitutes a fair price range for a given reference. Those are skills that you will learn by sticking around here on OF and reading everything that you can on the site. There is a weatlh of experience here and most members will be happy to help you evaluate a potential purchase provided that you have done some research on your own to add to the discussion. As for The Omega Enthusiast, that is an excellent site for viewing many authentic vintage Omega watches all in one place and can be very useful as a standard of comparison for potential purchases from other sources. The owner of The Omega Enthusiast has also produced a series of free educational videos about vintage Omega watches that are available on YouTube and I encourage you to view them to broaden your knowledge base. All of that being said, be advised that while all of the watches offered on The Omega Enthusiast website are authentic, recently serviced and generally in very good condition, the prices are very high -- usually more than twice what you would pay for the same watch in similar condition sourced elsewhere. WatchRecon.com is also a very good source to set up a search for a particular watch reference that may interest you. In short, learn all that you can, do your homework, ask questions here before purchasing, and take your time. Vintage watches are a minefield, but there are lots of diamonds in the rough out there and finding them is a large part of what makes horology such an interesting and fun hobby. Knowledge is your best friend in this hobby. Good luck with your search. .

In case it's not obvious, production dates for Omega will generally be approximate based on serial number. Very rarely will you have definitive information. Longines, on the other hand, provides free historical information, so collectors will very often be able to provide details about exactly when the watch was delivered, and where.

This Omega is from approximately 1947, and pretty typical of what you might find from that era except that it is larger than most (38mm vs the more typical 35mm). It has a 30T2 movement.

Hi David
heres a nice looking 1947 Omega- but better get blessing from the experts first if you like it.

Rather than trying to become an overall expert before buying something- just find one reference you like after some browsing, then research the socks off that one and then dive in.

That's a nice dial, but the hands are not original, and 30mm is extremely small.

Dan,
Thanks so much for your kind and informed reply. Your advice is well taken.by me. 30mm is too small for me, although the watch looks nice.
I will keep looking and please, if you happen to see anything, let me know.

David

Thanks again for all of your replies and information. Trying to obtain a specific watch let alone a specific year is a daunting task for this 77 year old. I have found this on eBay. Buy It Now is 2k but, can make an offer. Here are the pictures. Interested in the validity, valu and condition of the watch through your knowledgeable eyes The strap or bracelet I can worry about later, although at this age, who knows how much later is.
This group and this forum has been fantastic.
Thanks,
David

I would suggest you consider finding a watch from the era and not confine yourself to a specific year - it could be a shame to rule out a great watch because it's not the exact year. That's my strategy.
Given enough time of course you can hold out for what you want. (You've already been given a bit of rationalizing wiggle room by the fact that serial number vs, specific year is not necessarily exact....)
