·These two Speedy´s were up for auction this weekend, and coincidentally with an hour between….
And I was in the middle of preparing for the tonight's party, but I made my priorities!
😉
2998´s rarely come up for auctions, so I could not miss them!
They were so different, compared to each other, and in the either end of the Speedmaster price chart.
So to make things easier, I namned them The Beauty and The Beast!
Starting with the Beast:
This one was up for an auction a month ago, but something happened, and it came up again!
Post done by our dear @pdxleaf !
It is a 2998-5, with serial nr 18419960, this should be in the correct range for a -5, and it had the symmetrical bridge.
The watch was in a tough condition…but all the parts looks period correct except for the crown and the pushers (maybe).
The dial was very hard to assess based on one picture, there could be some blemishes on the hour subdial,
and that subdial hand looked really weird with the black spot…
The indices had some discoloration and some missing lume, nothing disturbing, and had a nice vibe together with the dial.
The bezel had seen lots af action, and was really messed up.
The same goes with the case which had lost its definition and lines, and with some pitting between the luggs.
But the caseback looked very nice and sharp compared to the case.
Wrong, and bent crown/stem, cracked crystal and discoloration to the subdial hands.
I think that the pushers have been replaced, and these need attention during the service.
No lume on the alpha hour and minute hands, they could be original to the watch, but hard to see the shape etc on one single picture.
A couple of watchmaker marks, a few screw heads abused, some scratches, but nothing looked damaged.
Value?
My Do You Like The Watchometer did not move so much, I think that the dial with adjusted hands (and hopefully the subdial hands) would look nice.
But the condition of the dial was a mentioned hard to assess....
The bezel could be charming, but the case was too far gone for me.
I would call this watch a fair watch (6500$), and that would be after the service, adjustments, new correct parts etc.
And these things would cost a bit.
The lot came up, with lots and lots of bids since the estimate was low (4000-6000 $ excl the premium).
And the hammer landed at 7200 $ including the premium (but without local taxes)!
On to the Beauty!
This one was in a completely different league!
WOW!!
All my meters hit the top!
A 2998-3, serial nr 17.76 mill, also in the correct range for a -3, and with the symmetrical bridge.
According to the curator - a one owner watch, possibly never serviced.
Everything on this watch looked just amazing, we are talking about a watch that is over 60 years old!
The bezel is not a top grade bezel, and the rehaut ring had some corrosion.
But the rest - WOW (again…😍)!
A lovely dial, with amazing colors to the lume plots and hands.
The case and case back had some marks, but in a very very nice and sharp condition.
Value - the watch is used, and with scratches and dings, so around Very Good plus (roughly 20000$).
But then you have the history of the watch, the bracelet (a tired one), the box and manual…
I myself think that there is a premium with one owner and untouched watches!
I made up my master Masterplan on this one….and even had in mind a couple of plus ones…..because this one would be bid hard on!
The lot came up, and this one had a bidding Bonanza!!
I did not have time to count the bids, and sadly it went a bit over my final bid….
The hammer fell at 30000$ including the premium ((without local taxes)!!
An amazing price for an amazing watch!!
I would have loved to win this one, but sometimes things don't go as planned…..
May I say/write that the fine conditioned Speedys do get attention and also get high prices?
And that the project, low quality ones are what they are for the moment?
Attaching pictures, and starting with the Beast, following up with the Beauty!
I really really hope that these Speedy went to Forum members, and that they will be shared with us in the future!
Enjoy the pictures, and please do comment!

Thread '2998-5 sold at auction $11250' ·
Anyone get it? Looked original and attractive. I thought it a good deal at $11,250 (plus unidentified sales tax). Needed a crown...
