Omega Speedmaster or Rolex Daytona.

Agree. aluminum has a special warm look to it. I also agree that the 3861 is a more special movement. It's evolution dates back to the 861 maybe even 321. I do believe the Daytona is special also. They are just different and one isn't better than the other unless you take into account cash value.

If you take into account cash value, you have a lot more cash on hand after purchasing a Speedmaster to put somewhere as an actual investment. I tend to think that the purpose of wearing a watch that expensive (really of any of these) is to show off how many dollars you have that are disposable.

Well said Erich. I always buy what I enjoy. I wear a watch because it is something that I enjoy. I never wear a watch so I can enjoy someone else's reaction to my watch. Another reason I like Speedmaster.

Just saw a video that reminded me of this...not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but I see more Daytonas on women than men. Seems to be very popular as a ladies watch, in particular the white dialed version. Anyone else notice this?

Yes, this happened to me. I was pesturing my wife for years with watch pictures, trying to get her to pick out a watch. (She didn't enjoy it, but I was relentless/obsessive.)

Finally, after begging her to look at just a few more (hundreds) of pictures, she scrolled past one and said, "Oh, I like this!"

It was a gold Daytona. When I told her the cost she rejected it. (She's okay with me spending money on a watch for myself but doesn't want an expensive watch for herself.)

Yes, it surprised me. But the Daytona did what hundreds of other watches couldn't do.

She ultimately chose a Constellation that I bought for myself originally, which she calls her "piepan." I later got her into my AD to look at pre-owned watches, mostly Longines and Datejusts and day-dates, and she saw a Cartier that she liked. She was surprised by it but really liked it on her wrist. So happy ending.

Might it be possible that the selection of the gold (!) Daytona was nothing more than a cunning ploy to bring your relentless/obsessive/unenjoyable attempts to engage her with watches to an end? I'm a bit like this with my wife, sadly... and if the one watch to excite her had been a gold Daytona, I'm sure would've given up for good right away! Circumstantial evidence for this hypothesis is the eventual choice of the absolutely gorgeous Constellation, and the lovely Cartier--your wife is clearly a person of fine taste! 😀

This happened with my Airking. After years of buying her vintage ladies watches (many she loves) my Airking made a migration from my drawer to her vanity, then her vanity to her dresser and eventually into her jewelry box. Of course I was fully aware that this migration was happening…but now I need a black DJ to replace it, shucks.

My wife told me she wanted an AK, so I got her one. But she never wears it. I think she likes the look, but the oyster bracelet isn't super comfortable for her.

Throw it on a jubilee and see if that changes the game for her.

Yeah, I thought of that. I'll need to pick up a 19mm jubilee when I see one, I don't have any lying around. They're actually not super common.

I picked up one for my OPD a few years ago on eBay for $400, date code from the late 80’s if I recall), they were pretty abundant at that price back then but hard to find not needing viagra.

But it would be easy to buy a cheap knock-off on eBay for $40 and see if she likes it. If that still doesn’t move the needle then you are only out $40 and put it on something else. If she loves it, then track down a real one.

I too beg the wife to wear a mechanical watch. She picked out…yep, you guessed it, a gold Daytona. She can only identify Rolex, can’t name another brand to save h̶e̶r̶ my life.

It’s like politics- if you sell the lie hard enough and never back down on it- it eventually becomes accepted as truth.

In my wife's defense, she also has a gold-filled Eternamatic Centenaire that she loves.

Sometimes people just like Rolex watches.

My thoughts, following the discussion here in this thread.
It is very simple for me:
I love watches.
I love vintage watches.
I love neo vintage watches.
I love modern watches.
I love cheap watches.
I love expensive watches.
I love watches, I can affort.
I love watches, I cannot affort.
I love bling-bling watches.
I love puristic watches.
I love Omega watches.
I love Rolex watches.
I love watches from any brand I love.
Most important: I love watches, I love to love 😀

In terms of “feel” Daytona is a better watch. More luxurious for sure.
However, when you look at it as a “watch” it doesn’t look that good - time readability is awful vs Speedmaster = superb legibility.
You couldn’t beat speedy as a legend. Moon landings, movie films (astronomy) you could see that watch.
All I know about Daytona as a history is that it used to have a Zenith movement.. and now considered a very demanded option.
Imagine I could get it now with a discount I woundnt take it.

Nothing says more about this debate than seven pages of bullshit and still no consensus. 😜

I like both, but my next watch will be a Speedy. Nuff said.

I love the history behind the Speedmaster but for pure aesthetics, a Daytona panda really does it for me.

Marvel fan?

Here's a tough one, Marvel or DC?

If that's a Marvel quote, I wouldn't know about it.
