As this has happened to a few people, could it be there is a problem with the newer speedmaster designs?

Maybe they are using the wrong size anti-magnetic cover or the enlargement ring is not thick enough? @Archer

Hey everyone,

This is my first post on OF, but I'm a longtime lurker and found this forum really helpful over the years. I'm also active over on WUS and IG. I want to give this thread a bump because I also noticed the "rattle" that a few members have complained of with their newer Speedmasters (THREAD #1: This one, THREAD #2: https://omegaforums.net/threads/rattling-speedmaster-pro.94717/, THREAD #3: https://omegaforums.net/threads/speedmaster-moonwatch-rattle-noise.110299/). It appears the verdict is still out on what can be making this faint noice.

I also noticed it my particular Hesalite Moonwatch (purchased new in December 2019) when I was changing to a leather strap from the factory bracelet. It seems that a few members have taken their watches to the OB or sent them and were told that this vertical rattle is "within spec" and it's simply the "anti-magnetic cover." I know, I know...just don't shake the watch or acutely listen and it's case closed. With that being said, I heard it and was under the impression that "ticking" is the only thing you should hear in a mechanical watch.

After reading responses from @Canuck and @Archer in the above threads (as well as these two... https://omegaforums.net/threads/basic-watchmaking-tips-checking-and-adjusting-end-shake.100219/ and https://omegaforums.net/threads/first-vintage-omega-rattling-noise-after-service.30799/), I was wondering if the alleged vertical "anti-magnetic cover rattle" can simply be chalked up to hearing slight "end shake" within the mechanical movement? Is this something that can typically be heard within a watch like the Speedy? The dial/movement does not appear to be moving, nor does it feel like something is loose inside. Rather, it's only faintly audible. The only other mechanical watch I have is a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical and it makes a similar noise but I'm not sure if it has a movement cover inside. Any help would be appreciated, whether it's watch-related or simply recommending a psychiatrist. Here's a picture of the bastard in question...

Lovely watch btw. S
So after the 3rd time of sending my watch into omega regarding this issue. They say it is "within tolerance". I just hope this rattle has no repercussions down the lifespan of the watch as I can do nothing more with regards to getting the rattle sorted. I am deeply disappointed by omega's service centre. They do not seem to take customers queries seriously. I am strongly considering parting with this watch as it has given me nothing but frustration.

Thanks and I hear ya...once I notice something, it's hard not to see (or in this case, hear) it haha. I still have a hunch that the faint rattling we hear could be "end shake" is some of the components of the mechanical movement. I'm interested to hear a watchmakers perspective...not sure if this phenomenon is typically audible or not.

Yes, end shake can certainly be heard as I've mentioned. Took this video before lunch...Panerai I have in the shop, recently serviced and ready to go back to the customer...turn your volume up:

Other than the one sound where I accidently hit the camera with my finger (you can see the camera move) the rattling you hear is end shake of the pivots in the movement. There is literally nothing else it even could be, because everything inside this watch is screwed down tight, as are the bars that hold the strap, so there's zero external rattles.

This whole issue is being so overblown by people it's amazing. It's not the inner cover, because as has been said it is clamped down on by the case back, and holds the movement spacer (and the movement) securely in the case.

People should really stop obsessing about this and just enjoy the watch...

Right on and thank you for the video/explanation! Became concerned when I read that there should be no rattles coming from inside the watch and that others didn't hear anything with their Speedys.

It would've been strange if Omega changed something that allowed for movement inside the case. It's even stranger that Omega techs are wrongly telling customers that it's the anti-magnetic cover rattling inside...

Yes that was the confusing parts in all this, because that clearly shouldn't be happening given how these watches go together.

My guess after reading all these posts is that it was the only thing they could come up with, but it's very misleading.

What surprises me about all these posts is how good everyone’s hearing is! I can’t even hear my watches ticking anymore.

Just noticed this on a new GO PanoReserve (manual wind movement). A small "tink" can be heard with motion in the vertical plane (e.g. flipping the watch over). The watch otherwise runs well.

I thought a manual wind movement does not have any loose parts, but apparently the balance wheel can jiggle.

Thank you Archer for the video and the explanation.
