Do any of the "original" models have this new dial layout?

The originals are as they are - original with the Cal. 1151.

I much prefer losing the calendar function (made the dial busy, especially being a 'reduced' version) and I like the dial and color combination very much.

By "reduced" you mean smaller? Just to clarify this is not a modular movement, as used in Speedmaster "reduced" models.

If you actually meant smaller, yes the original is a whole 0.7mm smaller than the new one in terms of case size...

Wow... Seems unreal that Hodinkee just netted 3.25 million dollars off of 500 watches in about 30 minutes. From a business perspective, can't argue that they haven't done something right.

I don't mind it, but the fact the 12 looks offset to the logo(I guess just the nature of the digits 12?) would make it hard for me to live with. Like having a misaligned bezel.

Yes, by reduced I meant smaller dial layout. Visually the original layout looks busier and more crammed than this LE version (to me...). The new one almost manages to leave the 3 and 9 whole while the 6 is cut in half. I've often been tempted to snag the MK40 when they come up FS, but haven't done it due to the way the dial layout looked based on the size. I know its a silly hang-up and nit-picking, but so is much of what drives our personal likes/dislikes with any watch.

That's not what 'netted' means. This watch grossed $3.25 million. I gather Omega gets more of that than Hodinkee since they made the product and got to sell half through non-Hodinkee chanels.

Had not noticed that, but I do now that you've pointed it out.

For me, I would like it even more if the numerals were made from the latest fauxtina colour found on the ST2.

According to the episode of Hodinkee Radio featuring Clymer himself a Skipper just sold on eBay for nearly three times MSRP. One sold last year for 40% more than MSRP within 24 hours of it selling.

Having owned a skipper, I think it was probably priced just a bit too low. Super unique dial color and Carrera layout.

Interestingly, an interview later showed that Heuwe had a 2 year gentleman's agreement to not release anything like it. Guess how long it's been since the release?

I'm playing the long game.

Say what you want about Hodinkee but they set the prices on vintage watches. Whenever I see an obscure 50 year old watch on the internet I see that Hodinkee sold one for $3400. 99% of the planet may have never heard of the watch but Hodinkee said it’s good and their followers immediately snatch it up. Future eBay sellers use the Hodinkee sales price but it never seems to sell like they sell to their followers. I’m not sure that many future Speedmasters will gain value like the Alaska Project since they literally release 8 limited editions per year. If you like this one then buy it (they’ll be on the net tomorrow) but it’s not going to gain value down the road

He means netted, as in captured in this instance, I think 😉

Of course you have to like it - in all the reasoning people use on forums for picking one watch over another, for me it simply comes down to what I like first and foremost.

When I made my initial comment in response to your post on the second hand prices, I didn't know that you didn't like all the features of the watch that you have now listed as negatives. Most people here tend to like the "original" version of these watches, rather than re-issues that vary significantly from the original design. If that's not the case with you, no harm no foul mate...

I personally don't like either of them. 😀

Probably. But when you talk about 'netting' a dollar amount it means what you cleared after costs. Hodinkee did not 'net' $3.5 mil. What they net will likely be in a few hundred thousand dollars.

I like it - and I dare to say I like it much better than the Ultraman, which albeit interesting, felt gimmicky to me and was trying a bit too hard!

And I'm pretty impressed by the Dink's influence on the market btw... and by the fact that contrary to Omega, they ask to pay upfront, so way less flipping-a-product-you-don't-have game here! I'm not always in love with their editorial lines, but man, this, the Skipper, they can do business pretty well with some pretty cool neo-vintage designs 👍

Who else got one?

Even so, Omega gets to sell some (somebody said half) through their own retail chanels. Hodinkee didn't capture any of that.

And I'd argue that as popular and influential as Hodinkee may be, even the most poorly designed Speedmaster could sell more than 500 pieces online in under an hour. In other words, Omega didn't need the Hodinkee branding to move these so quickly.

.....yes, that is also correct, it has two meanings.

I just got a message from my local boutique and was told I could be placed on the list for 6500 refundable deposit. Let me know if anyone is interested and I will put you in contact with the manager.

Who wouldn't want a Speedy LE committing the 10th anniversary of a blog?!

Indeed... and they shouldn't consider an Alaska Project 50th anniversary chronograph ???? 😕

No it has 1 meaning and then some people use the word wrong. Net and gross are 2 very specific terms.
