Had it in my cart... In the half-moment I lay in bed debating whether or not I should, sold out. Probably for the better - always regret buying into the hype.

Feels like half the watch of the original with a simpler movement...

Boy, that looks just godawful ugly. I get that it’s a highly personal tribute to Ben Clymer and credit is due for that, but I don’t think anyone was exactly clamoring for a Mk40 reissue. Especially one that doesn’t incorporate its good feature (interesting calendar function) but showcases its bad feature (the dial and color combination)

I expect by middle of next year we’ll start to see these languishing on sales boards and C24 with sky-high asking prices and no takers

I would have bought one in a red hot second, of course sold out long before I clicked the "BUY" button. Too bad... at only 500 sold I'm sure these will be bid up far above my pain threshold and so will never be within my reach.

Don't worry, there are plenty of the original model this was made after (35205300 on bracelet) out there on the market, for a fraction of what this one would cost new.

I'm glad it didn't have a calendar function. The dial on this much nicer than the Mk40 it's an homage to. And I hope Omega does nothing like this in the future either. I'll be honest and say it's not my favorite Speedmaster that I don't yet have, but I think on the blue Davenport strap it's going to look great.

We'll see. I've seen very few Hodinkee pieces up for resale over the years and nearly always a markup. According to the episode of Hodinkee Radio featuring Clymer himself a Skipper just sold on eBay for nearly three times MSRP. One sold last year for 40% more than MSRP within 24 hours of it selling. In fact the only Hodinkee piece I've seen for close (% wise) to msrp is the Nomos release which oddly enough is still available at that price.

Chrono24 has one for less than 40% of what the Hodinkee release costs if someone is really after one.

My thoughts exactly.

It’s not a watch designed by Hodinkee - it’s a recreation of the watch Ben Clymer received from his grandfather. It’s a re-issue not a new design....
Then let me take back what I said and instead just remark: "Jesus, what a bloody ugly watch". 😉

The legitimately “limited” number of these (500) will likely save their resale value. By no means a classic (and Ben has admitted as much in interviews before), but there will be considerably more than 500 people in the world that want one.

If this had been a 2,012 watch “limited edition” I would totally agree with you - but they’ve actually restrained themselves from a production standpoint on this one...

(I didn’t buy one so no dog in the fight - just my opinion)

Manufacture-blog collaborations seems to be the way many are using to push more sales at the moment.

I love how diverse people's opinions and feelings can be to any object. My immediate reaction is the exact opposite of yours. Chacun son goût

Completely opposite reaction again. I much prefer losing the calendar function (made the dial busy, especially being a 'reduced' version) and I like the dial and color combination very much. I really like the old bubbly style alpha numerals (sorry, no clue what the proper watch aficionado term would be...) and the mixture of red, white and blue colors on a black dial. 😎

I expect by middle of next year we’ll start to see these languishing on sales boards and C24 with sky-high asking prices and no takers
I hope so. By then my watch spending account will be refunded after the ST2 and this would be a nice addition. I highly doubt you are right though, purely as things like this don't often go in my favor... 🤔

I often search autotrader for used cars (911, M4, etc) and I could easily modify your comment slightly for what I find regularly...

Man, that's an ugly leather interior! Porsche/BMW going overboard with all these leather options. Other people obviously disagree with me, as the cars were bought new at prices much higher than I'm seeing them sold for in the used market. Shocking that Porsche/BMW (et al) take the same damn car body and think they can sell with so many different combinations of body and interior colour combinations... the nerve of those companies, trying to sell more units by varying their visual aspects slightly... 😉
