I simply find it to be a fun, sporty chrono with the bones of a Speedmaster. It reminds me of the same nautical vibe as seen on the Skipper

Here's the funny thing: The Skipper was a beautiful dial slapped into a sub-Kickstarter-quality watch. (Seriously. I did buy one, and it was so crappy I just couldn't justify keeping it. My Hamilton Khaki Mechanical is a better watch)
Whereas the Hodinkee Speedmaster is a Kickstarter-level design put into a truly high quality watch.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interesting. I'm surprised the quality was so poor. I know Tag isn't Rolex/Omega/Patek, but I certainly expected more than what you've described.
I don't doubt the H10 will be high quality, particularly since I've handled (and nearly purchased on multiple occasions) the FOIS on which it's based. I'm not sure I'd classify the design as Kickstarter-level though. It may not be the most cohesive design to ever grace the dial of an Omega, but there's a certain exuberance to it that I personally find appealing. Too many watches are minute variations on the same theme, that I find this a refreshing change of pace.

I'm curious, what makes you so upset about the design specifically? I'm always open to other people's opinions and thoughts.

The Skipper is based on the Caliber 18 Telemeter line, which features a bargain-bin Sellita movement with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module mated to it. These kinds of movements are often found in microbrands at $500 or so, and feel tangibly cheap when wearing or winding. (Unfortunately, even TAG's new in-house movements are poorly engineered and are causing major backlogs in their service centers)

I'm curious, what makes you so upset about the design specifically?

I've made my case in many posts in this thread already but what it comes down to is this: It's a lazy copy of an ugly dial design, and the watch it "pays tribute to" is readily available all over for around $2500 (and that watch has more features than this one at that). I think tribute pieces are better suited to giving collectors a chance to wear a super-rare or expensive vintage watch, than asking them to pay more for something they could already have if they wanted to.

I don’t care what anyone says. I collect speedies. I missed out on the Snoopy. I missed out on the ST1. After I made friends with an OB, I get heads up on them all & I will buy them all as long as my bank account allows & the wife doesn’t find out.

If one should hit & go up in value, I will serious consider selling it. That’s the icing for me.

They all have their appeal to someone. Ironically I get compliments on every single LE & no one ever even notices my Pateks.

I get laughed at if I walk into an AD & ask for a Daytona or a Nautilus. Screw them. I’ve made my own way to a very healthy & worthy collection of Speedmasters & I love it.

I'm not well versed on movements, but I'm curious as to how a movement can "feel tangibly cheap when wearing".

I'm also curious what you found "so crappy" about the Skipper.

Interesting. I had that Skipper in my cart but did not pull the trigger.

Well said. Speedy LE’s have hit a note for me also. I will get the call on the occasional Rolex sports model but the Daytona and the new Pepsi I can forget about that call.

I think the LE of 100 #PCASpeedy illustrated that. As long as the $ works for Omega they seem to be willing to do it.
Has anyone seen a PCA come up for sale? I like the watch but something about watches with a car connection always seem to limit the interest.

I have not seen any come up for sale. And it seems like only 1 or 2 of each previous release have been resold online over the years. These seem like watches the buyers hold for the long-term, as they are not flipper-friendly. Frankly a comparable new Speedmaster is almost $5k cheaper from trusted resellers, so the PCA watches really lose $5k right out the door in my opinion. As a buyer, I looked at it as paying a premium to get a watch that was fully sold out -- like missing out on a #ST2 initially, and having to pay a couple thousand more dollars to get a new one after a buyer flips it.

I was a little disappointed to see the new Porsche Design PCA watch already come out last month, but I believe Porsche approached PCA about that one, and it was not initiated by PCA like the others. I hope going forward they keep the PCA watches spaced about 5 years apart.

Differences between the inspirations for ST1, ST2, and the Hodinkee watch:

ST1: Go try to buy a radial-dial Star case Speedmaster. Even if one were to appear at auction, the last one went for $150,000. Enter the Speedy Tuesday, yours for $7100.

ST2: Go try to buy an Ultraman 145.012-67. They do appear from time to time, and are pushing what, $25k now? And it's just a regular 145.012-67 with an orange chrono hand. Enter the ST2 Ultraman, with a bit more going on than that (and much more than your regular Moonwatch), yours for $7100.

Hodinkee watch: Go try to buy a Mk40. You can easily find them all over the place for under $2500. This watch, though quite ugly, features a 24-hour subdial and triple calendar complications. Enter the Hodinkee 10th Anniversary, which features none of the above complications, only its colors, yours for $6500. A $4000 premium over a commonly available watch.
Well said Adam. Well said!

Must say, looks pretty decent in this wrist shot
I agree. November can not come soon enough. Can't wait to see it in person.

Based on how polarizing the reaction has been, I think at the very least this watch will be a conversation piece. Combine that with it being 500 pieces and tied to Hodinkee, I don’t think anyone would lose money if they had to resell for whatever reason. Curious to see what it will go for in the grey market.

Me too - can’t really say I’ve regretted it. Not my cup of tea in the end

Pun, Here you go. Down & dirty photos. Love them all. Some become dailies, other get put away. Rose Gold Patek is for formal affairs mostly but once in a while I wear with jeans too.

These are probably my most ‘important’ pieces, but only about half my collection.

So what is the consensus, will the new Hodinkee 10 year watch cause the OG MK40 to increase in value? Or is it too early to tell?
