I had to resurrect this fascinating post because I was rummaging around in a safety deposit box looking for something else when I re-discovered this Speedy I'd forgotten I had. When I bought it I assumed the dial was just very faded but it looks to me like an original grey dial(am I right?) It is a real silvery light grey in the flesh and the surface finish seems to differ from standard black dial Speedies. Maybe it has just aged that way.
The watch has never been opened and I can't get the back off so I guess it is either a 2998-62 or a 105.002-62 (place your bets.)
Still as dirty and scratched up as the day I found it.

Very informative thread, thanks OP for putting in the effort and all the other contributions.
I always thought the 'blue' was due to ageing, but with this thread, I am going to look closer at the dial the next time I come across a 'blue'.

Just an update to the watch posted by Ash above, which he has kindly let me have and which I took to Simon at STS yesterday for a service.
It's a 105002-62, 19833074, and Simon reckoned it had not been opened or touched since first purchased. This argues against grey dials being later service replacements and Simon considered that damage to the dial would have occurred under the glass.

The pictures (taken by Simon) don't do justice to the satin finish which is quite beautiful. The damage to the paint surface is particularly areas around the dial step and rims of the sub-registers and there are patches of rust adjacent to some of the lume plots that I had initially thought were smudged luminous material. But the overall appearance pleases me.

I have asked Simon to polish the crystal, service the movement and do nothing else. I'll post the "after" pictures in 8 to 12 weeks when he has worked his magic.
