Omega Speedmaster 2998-1 BASE 1000

WRIST ICONS is proud to present you the Omega Speedmaster 2998-1. This is a very important reference in the Speedmaster story. It was the first Speedmaster carrying a black bezel. It is the second Omega Speedmaster reference with straight lugs. The 2998-1 is the most collectable of the 2998-x models since it was the first of its kind and set the bar for all manually wound Speedmasters that would come after it. The Speedmaster CK2998-1 is the first reference of 8, and was introduced in the fall of 1959.This extremely rare reference has only been made until 1960. The CK2998 was also the first Omega in space, on the wrist of astronaut Wally Schirra. It was his own privately acquired watch and joined him on the Sigma 7 mission in 1962.

This watch has the original BASE 1000 DON (dot over ninety) bezel as well as a beautiful and sought after 7912 flat link bracelet with 6 end links date stamped 4 64 meaning 4th quarter 1964. This watch has been bought by a serious Speedmaster collector (I am selling several Speedmaster on behalf this collector) from the son of the first owner and comes with an Extract of the Archive dating this watch to JANUARY 15, 1960 delivered to the Netherlands Antilles.

Notes & Conditions:

This particular Omega Speedmaster 2998-1 has just undergone a full service. This work was carried out by our watchmaker, an retired watchmaker from an Omega service center using original parts. They also placed a new original Omega plexi-glass with the Omega symbol in the center.

As with all of our pre-owned watches this watch comes with a full 12 month WRIST ICONS warranty that will be invoked from the day of purchase. Further: everything is cleaned before sending the items.

The below information is based on the reference book Moonwatch Only from Grégoire Rossier and Anthony Marquié.

• Reference: 2998-1
• Serial no: 17.302.1**
• Caliber: 321, A1 – 1st generation, fully serviced by Omega service center watchmaker
• Caseband : Type A1 Symmetrical case, Straighgt lugs, made by HF Huguenin Freres. Case band looks polished, but in excellent condition has some tiny marks on it
• Dial: A4– Short markets-Round O )159-1960/61) Professional inscription absent, non stepped dial, Applied Metal Logo, SWISS MADE without T marks, Tritium indices with a very consistent lume. Dial is original, some tiny spots on it, lume is original, faded on some hour markers
• Bezel: A6. Black BASE 1000-long 4 (1959-1960/61) san serif font. Bezel is in excellent used condition. It has scratches on it, and a small ding at 10, but overall in great condition as shown on the pictures.
• Hands: B2 – Alpha-Straight groove, Original baton hands and spear chrono hand. Drop end chrono hand. There is some tiny bits of radium missing on the hands.
• Caseback: A3 Speedmaster in center-double bevel. 2998-1 inscription on the inside. Excellent condition
• Crown: Original, A1 24teeth, narrow Omega flat feet.
• Pushers: Type 1 small, Original pushers.
• Hesalite: Original with Omega logo etched.
• Bracelet: later original 7912 with the correct ’6’ endlinks (date stamped) 4 64 means 4th quarter 1964. With all bits and in excellent condition. Some of the pictures are with 4 endlinks. But with this watch come the correct 6 end links!

I am not sure if you’ve copied the text from MWO without adapting it to your listing. In this case, however potentially Original Omega parts, the pushers and crown certainly aren’t original to this watch but later service parts.

These aren’t Type 1 small pushers.

Sorry I made a stupid mistake with the pictures. I told the original owners that if they want to sell the watch it would help if they replace service parts with the original crown and pushers. My photographer took some of the pictures first and some later. Next week i will go to the vault and make some additional pictures of crown and pushers and caseback and replace the old ones. If you have any kind of other questions, feel free to ask.
