What do you mean erase the serial number?

on the photo, cross out the last 6 digits (with a solid color line. hope it's clearer 😉

What harm can come from showing their serial number?

what we are watching here is a holy grail of speedmasters. if im the owner i'll take all precautions.

for confidentiality as normally being done here at OF and other sites. anybody who is out of his mind can always claim that the watch was his before it was lost. remember omega has no registry of ownership unlike rolex.

Anyone making that claim would have to have proof of ownership, so that doesn’t seem to be a realistic concern.

as you stated, better keep the serial no. posted openly as it is.

We see spammers on a regular basis that steal photos and details from threads like this and post a FS thread somewhere, often on chronocentric.

I agree and sorry for going off OP topic but this clause is included. "
A UWO can also be applied to politicians or officials from outside the European Economic Area (EEA), or those associated with them i.e. Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs). A UWO made in relation to a non-EEA PEP would not require suspicion of serious criminality." It Seems the new law is written to include almost anyone anywhere and regard anytime.

If you are suggesting that they will come after someone in the US over a watch...well that's crazy...

Of course they won't, but if he does decide to sell it (which yes, he states that he does not want to do, just saying), they will definitely notice

I've sold tons of items and no one from the UK or EU has come after me yet - I guess I'm just lucky! 😉

I think the OP should hope his grandfather hangs around for another 7 years. (Hopefully longer for the OP’s sake)
The time limit for a gift under inheritance tax rules in the U.K.
not usually a problem when inheriting a ‘nice watch’
But this watch could push an estate over the £325,000 limit.
Edit
If he’s in the U.K. that is...

I thought that personal sales of vintage watches are exempt from UK income tax?

Sales yes and capital gains but I think they’re still liable for inheritance tax.

It was given as a gift by one living person to another. So are any gifts I give taxable? I need to start keeping a ledger at Xmas.

And does anyone really intend to make a record of all this for the IRS? Seems look a moot point.

And if you sell a watch of this value, I should think the buyer would make the trip to pick it up and wear it home. I know I would.

As long as you survive the gift by 7 years - it doesn’t count towards IHT.
The rule is intended to stop folks giving their wealth away.
This is only in the U.K.

I see. Makes sense. No one would ever know I had received the watch, and there is no previous record of it having value, so.....
