Greeting OF!
December month has been a tough month for me regarding my workload, but I have had some time to look at watches!
😉

2024 has been an interesting and fun Speedyhunt (for me), maybe not so many nice 105-012´s or other stepped dialed Speedys.
The focus for my Speedy hunts are in Europe, but there might be better hunting grounds in Asia, USA or other places?

Or could it be that the ”well” is drying out?
I have talked about this with a few auction houses, and they are having harder times to get hold of the beloved barnfinds.
They do come up sometimes, and these always get amazing results!

But I have also seen and followed lots of 70´s Speedy, some of them in a very nice condition.
They have achieved goods results, but even the ones with lower quality/issues get decent prices.
There is a big gap in terms of prices against the stepped dials, but it is also an indication that the market is still alive, and hopefully growing again?

Our Dear @Spacefruit has his lovey price chart that most of us use as a guideline,
and 74´s, 76´& 78´s in good condition are roughly around 2900 € /3000 $ (head only).
The fair ones are valued about 800 € /900 $ lower.

Here is a 145.022-76 that I got interested in. The estimate was silly low...
The 76´s are not so common, and it would have been nice to have one in my collection.

This one had a very scratched crystal, so a bit hard to assess.
I talked to the curator, and they looked at the dial with a loupe, and they could not find any oils spots, scratches, marks or other things on the dial.
I often trust the curator (maybe a Swedish thing….😁), but the ones that I have won with their judgement are correctly assessed.

I had one major problem with the dial,
the case back was stamped 145.022-76, and the serial nr placed it correctly.
But looking at the dial, the S reaches down to the P (Tall S..)?
I reached out to a Forum member (thanks @Foo2rama ), who helped me with this, and he convinced me that the dial was correct for the reference.
And it was the dial and the lume that made me interested in the watch to begin with.
They looked very nice and promising.
The bezel looked great, with a very slight fading.
The case and case back were in a poor/fair minus condition, with lots of dings, scratches and marks, and also with a previous polish.
The movement was in need for a service, some scratches, but nothing that stood out.

Auction day came, and I had my Masterplan.
But the biding rushed up to 3150 € / 3300 $, and then stopped.
The next bid would have been 3500 € / 3700 $, but that was too much for me.
So the hammer fell at 3150 € / 3300 $ including the premium.

Enjoy the pictures, and please comment as usual!

One last thought:
The Forum has got new Speedy (and of course other watchbrands/references) members, which is very positiv,
and the posts they do are both entertaining and interesting!
There are also lots of posts from one-timers/new collectors.

I do wish that some of the ”senior” members could have some more patience with them, and with the first time posters?
❤️

Yamas, Chin-Chin, Salute and Skål!
Have a lovely Christmas Forum Friends!

The one here was very stretched and beaten up, but it hade the older Omega logo,
maybe with a value of a few hundreds??

With those scratches on the crystal, I find it very hard to see any defects on the dial.

Naaah... that´s the charm with not viewing in person...😜

Nice piece! Had a close look at it and am pretty sure it is fully original and an honest example too. At that price, including the premium, I surely wouldn't have minded buying it. Not a steal, but a pretty solid purchase nonetheless.

I get that things get worn with age, but this one is trashed. I guarantee that none of mine will ever be that beat up, and I do wear them regularly.

I still think this would clean up amazingly well. The dial and hands are excellent for a late 1977 production -76. Bezel is solid. I agree the case is meh. 3300 with auction fees? I see that. 3300 and then auction fees… pass.

My guess is this is going to someone with a great case and bad dial and hands combo.

Also Hans is a great guy! As the default expert on the -76 model it’s always nice to have someone ask for my opinion on something that at most 20 people on the planet care about lol.

Hopefully one of us ends up in the others neck of the woods and we can share a beer or coffee or perhaps a nice Aquavit!

I am sure there are more than 20 people who care. Must be at least 30 of us on these forums...🤣

A bit sad if the watch would be broken up, but that could be a thought?

And thanks for the comment!
Diving/snorkeling around Catalina or Brewski, Gameldansk and a Aquavit in Copenhagen - that would be nice!

Cheers!

The idiosyncrasies on the small production change on the -76 model and the date when it happened is not much cared for lol. Both dials are acceptable, even the step dial -74’s and why some have them is an interesting mystery that no one cares for. Nor do people like my answer on why they exist lol.

So yes people care about the -74 through -78 speedmasters, they tend to be accepted as a monolithic group with nothing interesting about them with only 2 visible appreciable changes.
