Hi Forum Friends!

Here is a watch that came up for an auction a couple of weeks ago.
The first thing that hit was - HOW the hell can a watch become so trashed?
The dial and hands looked really awful, and the bezel had a lot of scratches and marks/dings.

But the estimate was low ( 5400€/ 5650$ with the premium),
so maybe this could be a fun project?
I asked the curator for a picture of the dial, since this might be a perfect dial for a relume.
And when I got it, there was no use going forward…🙁

The dial was very bad, with marks and stains, and also some extra lume that had been added…
So I dropped this watch.
And didn't ask for more pictures.

But I followed the auction, and the biding ended under the estimate, so no winner.
But during the day or following day, somebody must have called in and bought the watch.
And it went for the low estimate!

My thoughts on this watch:

Dial is very poor, and would be very hard to work on.
Hands could be good with a relume.
The bezel had seen a lot of action, fair here, but still attractive!
The case and case back had lots of marks (some deep dents) and scratches, but the edges looked good,
some brushing still visible and polished during a service, so maybe fair/ minus good?
There were the fat and short (nice…!) pushers, and a service crown.
The crystal was really scratched, so I couldnt see any Omega logo.

No movement pictures, but the watch was in need of a total service!
The serial nr checked in correct for this watch.

Following Speedmaster101 price chart (thanks again @Spacefruit ) this one would be between poor and fair (IMO),
3350€/3500$ - 4300€/ 4500$.

I actually wasn't going to do a post on this watch but since there has been some discussions here
on the Forum regarding low quality watches that were going to be dismantled/butchered for parts,
i thought that this one could be one of these?
Somebody might have had a nice dial and a set of hands?

Or what do you Guys and Gals think?

At least on a watch like this you know that everything you get is authentic (crown looks like a replacement but that is common). You buff out the crystal and it will already look a lot better. The case and bezel look ok. The dial, while not perfect, would look more than decent to the naked eye, blown up pics always magnify the issues (it is good to know they are there but unless you have superman vision you can't really tell while wearing it). How much did it sell for originally? Links to the auction?

I dont think anybody here on the Forum could live with that dial…
Looking at it would make me really sad..
And the price was what i wrote above:
5400€/ 5650$ with the premium

I think a relume of the dial and hands and a buff of/replacement crystal and this would be ok. The price seems high for what it is though.

The problem with the 105.012 is that they are not growing on trees and the supply for these will always be limited. This particular watch would look stunning with a good relume job. I know that speedmaster101 values a poor one at $3500 (and this one is not poor in my mind) but I personally have never seen a 105.012 sell for that low and I have been looking at them for a while (mind you, only on Ebay so there might be plenty more platforms where I am missing them.

If I'm not completely wrong here, Speedmastersales had a 105.012-65 that looked really nice with a relume for about 7800 $ earlier this year?
And the watch was serviced.
Just comparing...

how much did this go for @hansaboy ? $4500 seems high.

Agree with you that “The dial was very bad, with marks and stains, and also some extra lume that had been added”. Perhaps the only thing good about the watch might be the movement (sight unseen)

I would pay $4500 for this one. When was the last time uou saw a 105.012 sell for less than $4500? I would actually love to see examples of 105.012s that actually sold for less than $4500.

I’ve kinda fancied a beat up 321 daily wear for a few years but never found one. The issue with this one is is wasn’t that cheap, and it looks shit.

Yes you could relume it but it may well stick out like a sore thumb and look like lipstick on a pig. Then you need to service it. All of a sudden you’ve spent another $1000 so now it’s certainly not cheap but it still looks crap.

Or maybe not. Maybe a good relume could really make ot a great daily wearer. That’s the issue with these watches with issues, you often can’t trust auction photos to accurately show the attractiveness. Hopefully the person who bought it saw it in person and considers it a good buy

Thanks David,

I always appreciate your opinion, and nice to know that I am not "completely off track" with this one!

Cheers!
