I updated my post (OP) with a 2 years ownership update. Take a look at the last picture that shows the micro scratches in the AR coating... Any one else who has the same on this watch?

I had to return mine after a week! I had the black one on the rubber and I couldn't get comfortable with it. I have a flat 6.2" wrist and the lugs had huge gaping gaps where the rest of my wrist should've been. I was so upset when I gave it back because I think its my favourite sports watch ever. I'm just not big enough to wear it 🙁

It is a great piece indeed! Hopefully you find a nice alternative that fits you. Give it some time...

I swapped it for a blue 38mm Aqua Terra (same movement) and I can't stop staring at it. In fact I've barely taken it off in a month!

The Aqua Terra is a great watch. Since purchasing the SMP, I also added a blue dial AT with the 8900 movement and like it, but the blue on the new AT has a purple hue to it that I’m not very fond of. I also don’t like the horizontal lines of the new AT dial. At any rate, I believe the AT is a much better watch than the SMP and also has a better movement. The 8900 movement has 2 Main spring barrels and is also more finely finished than the 8800. In the coming months I will probably sell both my SMP and AT and replace them with the previous version of the AT. The Skyfall with blue dial and vertical lines is the coolest Omega ever in my opinion.

Yeah I'd agree with you there. The Skyfall AT is sensational. I have a flat 6.3" wrist so it had to be the 8800 38mm AT for me. I don't mind the horizontal lines. They look really slick. The blue isn't really blue - its more a blue-grey-black depending on the light. It doesn't shimmer and call attention to itself - its quite subdued. The date window at 6 o'clock gives wonderful symmetry. I would like to be able to turn it back or forward by whole hours but until Omega can figure out how to get the 8900 into a 38mm case, I can't have it all!

on what basis have you formed this opinion?

it’s not really an opinion. The 8900 has 2 mainsprings and the 8800 has one. You can see Perlage decoration behind the balance wheel on the 8900, where the 8800 has a bare metal finish. They are both fine movements.

The AQ is a stunning watch. So many color and size options. Great choice.

1 vs 2 mainsprings doesnt really talk to how well a movement is finished but i take your point around the perlage finish behind the balance wheel.

Great write up. I’ve been back to the AD a few times now and cannot settle on the grey or black dial. I also think I’m over the ‘Hershey’s’ He valve now

I picked up a Blue version about a week ago and i am very happy with it. Bracelet is very comfortable and it keeps great time. It is a very substantial feeling watch in terms of weight and presence. All in all, very pleased. Thanks for the thorough review.

Great review! I second everything you said, except for one thing: the bezel is indeed beautiful, but it is quite difficult to turn, especially when wearing gloves. But this minor disadvantage doesn't change the fact that it is an amazing watch. IMHO it's much better value for money than Rolex submariner

Great review! Could you please provide mirror shots of the watch on your wrist. I have similar wrist size and struggle to decide if it looks ok or a little too big..
