You have a PM - this sort of thing is what I love to do...
It doesn't get any better than Archer offering to repair/restore your watch. Do yourself a favor and reply to his PM then send him your watch. Regardless of who does the work it won't be a cheap date, but Archer's as good as it gets.

When he returns your watch please post a few before and after scans.

Oh, my! Now I see why Omega wants 3K to restore it. If I were you, I would let them do it and I would ask to send all old parts back to you. You will have an almost new watch with a story attached, I believe your kids will cherish it. Put all old part on display as a sign of a warning against hasty decisions.

Take this offer. Seriously.

Wow - thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate it.

I'm still torn though now that i hear all these responses i'm open to having omega service it.

As far as "original" - I get it its never going to be perfectly original now but would at least like to preserve as much as possible. In particular the dial. I might see if they will send back the original dial though I doubt it.

Also - didn't really save the child, my wording was a bit dramatic. He had floaties on and his little brother pushed him in. it was just a reaction. I should have put it in the safe when the pusher came out.

now i have to decide does this watch go to the kid who got pushed or the kid who did the pushing?

If it can be saved, Archer is the guy who can save it, and preserve as much as possible.

If sentimentality weren't a concern, you can easily get a replacement Speedy not from an AD for around $3200, with the full modern box with the bells and whistles. That is where I'd have a really hard time paying $3K to Omega to service that one.

thanks again everyone. Here's the sad photo of the watch if anyone wants to cringe.

Wow, that watch has definitely seen better days. What a story it can tell though!

I bought mine new for $3250. So I don't think paying omega 3K makes any sense specially because their won't be anything original left in the inside...

Archer if you end up doing this please post about the process. I really enjoy reading the detail in your work posts and I imagine this would be very interesting to follow.

Not sure if this helps but my watches are covered on my household insurance for accidental damage, don't know your circumstances but do you have any cover like this, might be worth checking if you do.

Renters insurance was the smartest thing I ever did when I rented an apartment in NYC.
I dropped my $3k MacBook Pro during a vacation and the insurance company covered accidental damage on it.
For like $160 a year it’s really a no brainer.

Homeowners should cover, but may not while on vacation. If so, they will want comps and it will be a process like having an auto accident, deductibles, and low balling. @Dsloan has it right that you want to schedule these individually as "agreed value" pieces where YOU tell them the value and pay the appropriate fees, in addition to your homeowners premiums. It's is very inexpensive, maybe $10 per $100 per year? That varies with the insurer, but you will then (usually, do confirm what your policy says) be covered for the full value in a situation like this. If you stated it as being worth $5,000 and paid the premium, then within 48-hours you should have a check for $5,000 for that watch.

I'm not beating you up over this, most people have no idea, but I have been reading horror stories lately and try to mention this as often as possible. Please, spare yourselves the headache. The investment we make in these watches is substantial, so this is well worth the cost IMO. One other thing, as these pieces tend to appreciate over time, stay on top of values and adjust your policy accordingly. Insure for the upper end of values too so you aren't stuck bargain hunting when you need to replace it.

Otherwise, I look forward to the stabilization and conservation of this special piece that @Archer accomplishes for you. One thing is for sure, you now have a hell of a story attached to this watch!

Yep - that's about right. I pay around $15 a month for $15K coverage w state farm. I can self-report value on anything under $2500. Have to get an appraisal for items over, but it's a very simple process. No deductible. And when I add something, I get to chat about watches with my insurance agent, who is also a collector.
