If you go down the ebay route, some advice:
1. Decide on one or two models that you like and study them intensively. Be aware that as you learn more, your taste may change!
2. Don't waste your time with business sellers.
3. Don't waste your time with Buy It Now listings.
4. Don't look for a cheap watch that needs work doing. Look for one that appears all original and in good condition.
We were all beginners once and we all understand the difficulty and stress in finding that first vintage Omega. If you are careful and patient, you will find one to enjoy for years to come.
I agree with all of this, except no. 4. I very much regret not buying a couple of great vintage watches on ebay many years ago that were not in working condition, but had great dials. For me, the dials alone would have been more than worth the final selling price in the low hundreds, now that I see how hard it is to find original dials in mint or near-mint condition in many watches over 60 years old. I know many of you despise "frankens", but I would have no problem pairing a dial like that with a case and movement for the same model, but in good working condition. Alas, I haven't seen a bargain like that on ebay in many a moon.
