Omega overshadowed by Rolex

I agree with pretty much all responses in this thread. Another reason I gravitate towards Omega: I’m a total contrarian. I see or hear too many people talk up Rolex and I like taking the less traveled road. I obviously love their timepieces, too. Anyone else like that?
Totally agree...

Amazing thread lol... I can’t talk about other’s experiences with Rolex, but I have a few modern and vintage Rolex. All of the modern one were bought at my local A.D. I was never required to buy something I didn’t want to get what I wanted. All the watches I bought new are considered “hard to get” think SD43, BLRO, etc... sure I had to wait a little, I think the BLRO took the longest, I think about 10 month.

i think the biggest problem is that the U.S has become an “ I want it now “ society. You don’s have to wait for an Omega, but for some of the Rolex you do, and people don’t like that. But I have found than in life, most good things don’t come right away.

I also agree that some ROLEX AD have questionable business practices, but most I have found will get you what you want. At least it has been my experience.

When did you buy these? Within the last 2 years?

I have not seen a retail price ss daytona / batman/ hulk for 3 years
I have not seen a retail price pappy van winkle for 5 years
I have not seen a retail price Hibiki 21, Yamazaki 18 for 1 year.

Part of the living life . I refuse to play the game with dealers.

Yeah I’ve been milking this for 5 years...

@chronos: all Rolex AD or different stores/brands?

The watches have all the stickers attached so I am unsure what the issue is, there is no difference in going into the store trying a watch on that the AD has ordered in for me and declining it so the next person gets a 'worn' watch or going in and trying on a watch the AD has for another customer?

At the end of the day, when the AD removes the stickers and gives the watch a polish with a cloth it is as clean as it could be, and you as the new owner will never know if the watch has been on someone else's wrist.
Because in one case the watch is owned by the AD. In the other one the watch is yours and you can drop by at any time to get it...

What happens if the potential customer has slippery hands and drops it? Would you be happy to go to your AD the next day to pick it up, only to be told: "Sorry, there was an issue with the watch: we had to send it back to be fixed. Please come back in 1 or 2 months"? And would you be happy to go to your AD and have to wait to pick up your watch because it is currently on someone else's wrist?
I won't...

Sorry but I don't agree, the likely hood of the watch being dropped and damaged in these situations is minuscule and you know that it is just as likely to be the watch slipping out of the gloved hand of the SA when handing the watch to me as it is a slippery hand of a customer.

Secondly there is no difference between the scenarios that I detailed. I may well have put a deposit down on my watch only to reject it, the dealers in the UK allow a full refund of any deposit, so yes the watch is technically going to be mine but I have no concerns with it being tried on as stickers are still in place.

Next, would your AD hand your watch out on the day when you are due to collect it, I think not. A good AD would let you try on a watch when they knew that the prospective owner is unlikely to come in, also I would ensure that the SA that I have dealt with is the person who completes the deal so I would know which shift they were working and make an appointment to complete the purchase so I would be fairly confident that the watch would be in its box ready for me not on someone's wrist when I walked into the shop.

Finally, until you make the final payment the watch still belongs to the AD, so you can argue that they can do what they like with the watch until you actually buy it from them. I don't believe that I have actually tried on a watch that the AD is holding for a customer who has paid in full, only that the watch is on hold either waiting for the customer to complete a payment or that the customer is next in line for the watch and will be coming in to determine if they want the watch or not.

That happened at Rolex ADs and Rolex stores in Bern, Bienne and Interlaken. I don't know about how other stores/brands handle this matter.

BL=Bleu NR=Noir. So Blue and Black bezel gets you BLNR aka "Batman"

Batman’s costume is typically black and grey with a yellow utility belt, and the inside of his cape/hood is often blue, and so the BLNR would be fit to be called the Batman. But others say it’s called the Batman because he’s a “bruiser” (black and blue).

For me it's easy to see why the Sub is more sought after than the SM300 : it looks less obnoxious and more legible.
If Omega were smart they'd release updated version of the SM120 and SM200.

BLNR is actually the real name of the watch, that other word is just a nickname given to it by the Anglo-Saxon commnity.

I appreciate it. I’ve got a lot to learn from you guys.

I have several breitlings and several omegas and a submariner on order. I have a close relationship with my AD and they tell me the submariner will be in rather quickly. We will see

In other words, I would love to hear in your own words why you choose Omega over Rolex.

There is no need to choose, when you could have either or both. For me, YMMV,
Vintage Speedmaster>Vintage Daytona.
Vintage Sea Dweller>=Vintage Submariner>Vintage Seamaster. Oyster case is just better for dive watches.
Omega AD > Rolex AD. Omega boutique is always welcoming, and keep in touch post purchase. Ben Bridge (Rolex AD), not so much, literally laughed at me when I went to buy a watch, tried another branch, and they actually asked a series of questions to qualify my 'worthyness' to buy one.

when these discussions veer into “[X] brand is just a status symbol,” I end up wondering about precious metal watches (from any brand)...

Is there a mechanical/functional justification for using precious metals? Or are all precious metal watches inferior to base metal watches for “real” enthusiasts?

When you turn 40 you're gonna love that fxxxing cyclops

I often wondered in my younger years (not soo long ago) why anyone would want a cyclops.... Now I get it, I don't love the aesthetics, but I can appreciate the utility 😉
