In general, Tag is pretty notorious for this...
Do you know if they’ve addressed it at all in recent models? I know there tends to be a lag of many years before new models make it to your desk out of warranty but the WAB2010/2011 and WAJ2112 Calibre 5 models had those failures from new so if its still happening people would know about it you’d imagine.

Speaking to the WAB2010 which is about a decade old now, the thread feels very fine and delicate and often when you try to screw it down it sometimes resists or pops out. So you back it off and try again with a bit more downward pressure to get it to engage properly, but if you put too much downward pressure on it you can damage the thread and that’s pretty much what I did.

It bit on the thread then popped back out as I tried to screw it down twice, then on the third time I pressed it in a bit too hard and it bit and screwed in but felt a bit too firm as it went in, and that was the thread ruined on a watch that had only just been serviced for a stripped thread.

While I’m sure it does happen to others I’ve never had an Omega, Rolex, Zenith, Seiko or anything else feel that delicate and need that much help getting started on the thread while screwing it down.

I saw Leo DiCaprio wearing the Calibre 5 in the Inception movie last night. Didn't look like he had any threading issue during the third level dream!

While everybody in The Wolf of Wall Street were wearing gold daytonas and stuff Leo was wearing a quartz gold plated Tag just because he was an ambassador of the brand at the time. Funny thing when he threw it in the crowd and people where fighting over it like it was a Patek or something 😜

Let's put it this way, I see a lot of requests come through from the watchmaker mailing list I'm on asking if anyone has a Tag crown and tube. I can't say how new these are, or what models they are, because I normally just delete the email since I can't help them. For example, this one came through on Monday...still in my deleted emails:

"Happy Monday, Looking for white screw down crown for Tag Heuer Aquaracer, #'s on case WAY1110 and WPJ0229 tap 10, 6mm in diameter and 5mm long. Case tub is 2.9mm diameter and treaded on inside."

Parts are not typically ordered by model number, but by case number, so I don't know what specific model numbers the cases listed are for.

I don't actually service all that many Tags, maybe one or two per year tops. I have one in the shop right now (was just working on it actually - Carerra) but it's not a screw down crown model. Based on what I see, more requests for these than just about any other brand, and I see the same chatter on forums that these are bad for stripping.

One last thing - be very careful with Tags on the secondary market - there are some very good fakes out there that are fooling a lot of people.

Cheers, Al
