I know absolutely zilch about sailing, but I really like the looks of this because, well, 'Murica. ::psy::

More expensive than the 2018 Pyeongchang red/blue LE, but doesn't include a big box with the stainless steel bracelet, spring bar tool, and unique carrying pouch. :/

One of the greatest America's Cup skippers of all time, Dennis Conner, was a carpet salesman. He won several cups but knew how to sail without being rich

Meh, no one understands their rules anyway. For me its some people on 2 boats sailing for an undefined target
Meh just another person complaining about LE’s for an undefined reason.

I’m a sailor, racing everything from dinghies and cats to yachts, and have done so since I was a kid. Quite like the design and colourway but unlike some of their previous versions this would not work particularly well as a regatta timer - seems like more of an homage watch. Perfectly nice, but there are several POs I’d prefer at the price, just as with the Ryder Cup ATs.

And yet all through this back and forth no one has mentioned that seconds hand. I think the Americas Cup trophy silhouette is pretty cool!

Great -- the seconds hand is a drinking vessel for the bourgeois...

Seems kinda meh overall but do appreciate the small details - extra color complexity of the bezel and ^ yes the seconds hand (although I don’t personally like seconds hand icons) just seems like they should be capable of more with all the good design language lately. Oh well, not a consequential release in the grand scheme.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. The Yacht Timer aspect of this is pretty useless, I mean you could make it work, but it would be a PITA it would literally be better to have a cheap quartz stop watch around your neck and through it overboard after the start. So odd, as they are normally really good about that.

IN the past they have used modified custom movements, marked chronographs, and even a modified x-33 movement in the last ETNZ.

Here is a nice list of the ETNZ's and some of the America's cup models.

( @steelfish here is all of them)

Oddly you can look at this one as a stripped down version of the 2013 model, which was a black ceramic GMT with the same bezel...

For mass start racing yes, but the Americas Cup is match racing and the starts are not timed as (I understand it). They jockey for position inside a box and try to fool the other into a bad position or going outside the box when means a 360 degree penalty. Then the most advantaged one takes off.

Besides I expect there's some pretty fancy software in use at the navigator's table to help with wind, current etc and predictions of what the other boat might do.

Makes sense, but they did the same thing on ETNZ watch 2 versions ago, which I assume does more mass starts.

The colors are not for me but I think the Planet Ocean has one fault... there are arrowheads on each hand. One or the other I don't mind, but two seems odd.

Yes, I do, and right now I am wearing a Railmaster LE. One hand with an arrow and one without makes sense but I don't get why both hands have arrow.

Planet Oceans always had 2 arrow hands since the very first model. What don't you get?

That's true, but I still use a regatta timer as a backup for yacht racing, and even sometimes while racing in other classes (Tornados, Laser, etc) and I find the different functionality to be an additional incentive, and of course these belong to a distinct watch genre in themselves. Otherwise it's a PO with a few modest aesthetic flourishes -- which again is absolutely fine, and may have broad appeal, but is less interesting to me personally.

AIUI that's still one on one match racing. The tactics are greatly different to mass start, so racing against many boats would not be helpful to sort out the pecking order.

I only ever did mass starts (North Sea) and here's the watch I used to time the start:

I also did all the foredeck work still wearing the Carrera. I don't know how it survived the way I treated it.
