We were very poor when I was growing up. But like most people, we lived and breathed sailing. Of course we couldn't afford boat shoes, much less a boat. So we had to sail on whatever we would. Usually we would wrap our feet in cloth and then sail on grapefruits. We were passionate, and it was all of our dreams to one day become professional.

You are so right. Your post brings back a flood of fond childhood memories. We were so poor when I was growing up the only "sailing" we did was in the full gutters by the roadside after heavy rain using tiny boats from leaves and twigs. We wished the rain would never stop such was our passion. Although we didn't know at the time, that grassroots experience designing, building and improving those twig & leaf boats gave us a valuable grounding in STEM.

Just don't go down the gutter drain looking for your lost boat...won't end well...

On the contrary, that's a practical lesson about the Coriolis effect, something to know about when sailing thru a cyclone/hurricane.

Beware of the clowns though...

So months later, after all the bitching and moaning about this watch, does anyone actually own one? I find it quite attractive and fun and might consider buying one. I've had little interest in Omega aside from my Speedmaster Pro Moon (3570.50.00) and this is their first watch in ages that caught my interest.

I should add that while yacht racing holds no interest to me, my wife and I used to recreationally day sail out of Marina del Rey and the San Francisco Bay. We joined a sailing club which was pretty cheap entertainment back in those days (the 80's).

Sailing isn’t a real sport?

Multiple classes in the Olympics.

Rich people entertainment?

You can sail at the local council owned sailing centre where I am for £20 a day including boat usage.

The Americas Cup is just the peak of that particular sport.

FYI you’re suggesting that people who enjoy the America’s Cup are “socially disconnected rich people” In a forum thread about a £5k plus watch... which is of course a purchase made by all the volunteers at the local food bank.

9 posts in and you’re doing great BTW. Not coming across badly at all. Well done.

Agree.

I ain't rich, and have competed as a sailor since I was a kid. And then as now it is also a sport that is remarkably open to persons who face challenges in terms of vision, hearing, cognition and mobility, providing a safe and often exhilarating outdoor activity. It isn't polo, FGS -- although perhaps polo has long since shed its Jilly Copper-ness and embraced the hoi polloi.

I have ordered one of these as a backup for a possibly non-arriving Snoopy. They seem to be thin on the ground still, so will see what happened.

It’s not even a real sport but some socially disconnected rich people entertainment, no one really should care about. If you like that, then this world is not for you...

Sailing isn't a rich persons sport in New Zealand, anyone can sail if they want to.
