To answer the initial question, I vote for the grandfather, the CK 2913.

This would be my suggestion. True, it is big and heavy, but after wearing 5 digit Rolex watches for some years now, it took me no time to get used to this bigger PO. I would send this watch anytime to compete with any Rolex sub.

The latest one by a mile. Technically..it's better

This. Plus, if 'rival' is to be based on intent/functionality of the watch, then it's Seamaster = Submariner and Planet Ocean = Sea Dweller

The wrist shot convinced me this a great competitor to the Rolex Sub. One complaint is the date, personally they are more of a distraction.

Always wondered why the back of Rolex watches are so plain and boring?

Glass backs are a deal killer for me. Omega is slowly manufacturing me out.

I'm not a huge fan either, especially on a diver, but FWIW I find the one on the 2018 SMP very unobtrusive and comfortable compared to others I've had (including the bubble on the Speedmaster 57 Coax). It suits the "dressy diver" vibe while not diminishing its capability, and I admit to enjoying the view on those rare occasions I remember to notice it.

Well, the title says it all and actually to me there is no definitive answer.
So,I wanted to read your opinion on this subject. There are many types of seamasters in omega catalog.
Which one of them in your opinion can best rival the submariner?
All of them.
Every once in a while when I need a laugh, I come back to this thread to look at this awesome post by @dennisthemenace. Makes me laugh every single time!

I think any of the modern Seamasters would be an acceptable alternative. The Seamaster watches have a significantly different style from Rolex across the board--and even among the various Seamaster watches. There are at least five different case styles of "diving" watches (Seamaster Pro, Seamaster 300 Master Coaxial, Seamaster Planet Ocean, Trilogy and PloProf). In terms of function, I would put the Submariner closest to the Seamaster Pro and Seamaster 300MC. Aside from holding its value, there isn't anything the Sub could do (in terms of function or fashion) beyond the abilities of the Seamaster. I suppose the Sub is made from 901L stainless steel, but if corrosion resistance is paramount, a titanium or ceramic Seamster would be even better. It's more of an aesthetic or style issue.

I'm definitely not qualified to distinguish between the movements. However, these product lines are both backed by large companies and extensive service networks. Each brand purports to exceed Chronometer requirements. There's nothing that sticks out as making me eschew one more than the other.

I agree with a lot of that - most Seamaster dive watches would be comparable to the Rolex in terms of quality and function, and some also in terms of bling and looks (ceramic bezels and bright lume). The Rolex movement, while hidden, is reported to be finished to a higher degree as you go deeper inside vs the Omega, even though they don't have fancy côtes de geneve and such like Omega (or Arabesce, whatever).

The 904L steel has a nice look to it in terms of tone, but I prefer my Ti Planet Ocean over that - it's much less prone to dings than the softer 904L steel.

The PO is closer to the Sub.
I
feel like Omega looked at the Sub in the 90's then designed a watch that was the opposite of it.

..Much talk about Seamaster vs Submariner and which is best etc... I still think though, that the Submariner/Sea Dweller has the crown when comparing screw down winder and bezel click system..Best quality and tactile feel..

I currently own an Omega SM300-Titanium and a Rolex SubC-ND.

PROS
SM300-T:
- lightweight titanium
- reasonable price
- available to buy at lower than retail
- 15,000 gaus resistance: Master Co-Axial
- titanium band (top and bottom) is easy to remove
- watch looks good with a NATO strap

SubC-ND:
- Bezel-click when turning feels like a precision machine
- the double-lock band is reassuring
- the glide-lock feature is really good and extends effectively
- easy to take off links to adjust for my wrist
- holds it's value very well
- luminescense is outstanding and lasts hours
- hugs my wrists

CONS
SM300-T:
- almost too light
- removing links is a PITA
- center polished links scratch like you would not believe
- Bezel-click feels like a toy (Omega needs to learn from Rolex)
- the luminescense is weak
- does not keep its value
- watch curvature does not hug my wrist and creates a space

SubC-ND:
- cannot purchase retail (no AD has them although with the current situation, that may change...)
- grey market cost is above retail cost
- people keep asking me if its real or not (really fricking annoying)
- most people I know who wear Rolex are douchebags

But I love both watches!!

I’ve never owned a Submariner so I guess I really can’t give a fair comparison. I have had 3 Planet Oceans with the 8500 movement and they have all been great. However, I now have the 42mm titanium Planet Ocean with the 8500 movement and it is absolutely my favourite. I could have purchased a Sub many times in the past and didn’t bother. I had the choice between the Sub and a BLNR 4.5 years ago and bought the BLNR.
I prefer the clean appearance of the PO over the Sub and the titanium version is extremely comfortable. I’d rather wear it than my BLNR and it’s an easy watch to wear. It’s all personal preference and have liked the PO’s since I first saw them. So this is the Sub beater in my opinion:
