I don't understand why this kind of watches are sold.
I’d surmise because the folks that were involved have departed our planet and the succeeding generations are unsentimental..

I wish I had taken before and after pics but several years ago I purchased a 18K Longines Ref 6888 that had engraving on it. My watchmaker laser filled the engraving and polished it. Even under 10X magnification there was no indication that the back had previosuly been engraved. Fornutately, the case reference numbers, hallmark and Longines logo were on the inside of the case back though. If there is a next time, I will take before and after pics. Felt a little sad to remove the message though.

I actually enjoy reading some of the messages on casebacks, especially the ones from over 50 + years ago.

Sure wish I came across a Daytona engraved "DRIVE CAREFULLY ME" prior to it selling at auction.

This watch was presented to my wife's Grandfather. I now own and wear it.

I have two - both from 1973 - I don’t know if it’s coincidence or if there was something 'in the air' that year…….

I bought the Rotary complete with box, papers and receipt. I don’t think it was ever worn, or just rarely, spending most of its time in a drawer.

I wonder sometimes if Shirley's love was ever reciprocated…

Again, with the Longines, I wonder what happened in the 'summer of 73’. I hope it was a happy occasion with a Delphic inscription

Or people die without kids, or have a household full of other stuff that reminds them of the dear departed, or the original owner of the watch has tired of it, or it's too painful to constantly be reminded, or they prefer photos or memories to stuff, or it was lost or stolen, as in my situation.

I wouldn't say it was because generations are unsentimental. Some individuals could be.

A lot of my watches have engraved backs. Especially the quartz 1342s. I still wonder who W.C.L was?

I asked in a visit to a crafts store if they had pantographs. Clerk did not know what that was. A device for engraving names on trophys was my reply. I guess this is now done with laser engraving.

The above was taken with a first gen digital camera in the 1990s. I think this was in the Jaeger-Lecoultre factory. It always amazes me how some people can freehand this stuff.

I love researching case back inscriptions it gives a sterile watch a history.
There is far more room on a PW but luckily on a WW usually a name and a date is mostly what you need to track down the original owner.

This one is a family heirloom. It belonged to my wife's grandfather, who had a long career as a butcher with the old A&P grocery chain. The watch is an IWC given to him on his retirement. When his widow passed away a couple of years ago, the watch was found in a drawer. We've had it restored and my wife wears it on special occasions.
