Newly acquired Geneve questions...

Hi all,

This is my first foray into vintage watches. I have bought this watch today, I’m aware it’s a Geneve but does it have a specific model name? By the looks of the pics, maybe just a new crystal will do. It’s a 35mm case, so I am currently searching high and low of what crystal size I need. Does anybody have a manual winder of this style? Also, I assume that the crystal is removed with a crystal puller? Thank you for any info or advice.

It will have a reference number, but no particular name. The photos aren't great, but to my eye, the dial appears to be repainted. You may be able to polish out those scuffs at the bottom of the crystal fairly easily. Often that type of thing is fairly shallow, and may actually be mostly residue from whatever the crystal banged up against.

Thanks for the reply, what makes you think the dial has been repainted? Also, what is the best method to polish the crystal? Thanks again.

I’ll let other comment on the dial, but regarding the polishing: Search for PolyWatch on Amazon and maybe watch a short tutorial on YouTube. It’s really easy.

Looks like I’ve bought a duffer then regarding the dial. It has got authenticity paperwork, but obviously the dial is pretty crap then ‍♂️

Authenticity, originality, it’s all a big blur with redials. Often they are the “original” dials, e.g. the dial that the watch left the factory with. Just that they were polished to the bare metal and painted / printed on to give this brand-new look. But of course one could still call it original, as it’s technically the original dial...

You can wait for others to confirm the redial, and if there’s the possibility of a return opt for that - or you just wear it. If you like it and there’s nothing you can do about it anyway, then why not enjoy it. Most likely, nobody around you will ever notice. Would you mind to share the price with us? Might have been a good deal anyway. 😀

£320. I had my doubts about the dial, but genuinely love the face and style of the watch. I’ve not paid £1000’s and personally it’s a watch I’ll wear in between my PO.

wear and enjoy the watch, polish the crystal if you must. Doesn't bother me with mine.

People just think you charged San Juan Hill with Teddy(or insert your own analogy here)

It’s difficult to give a good opinion on the basis of one rather poor photo. I’ve looked at the eBay listing and the other photos are not very helpful but the overall situation may be better than you first feared.

First, the watch seller seems to have only positive feedback but doesn’t appear to be a dealer. His other photos appear artless in a naive way - eg, the worn strap, his other watches, the lack of a movement photo and the generally poor resolution photos. In any event, photos can only take you so far.

So, the watch may actually be okay. I suspect it is all original because the other aspects of the dial and hands don’t seem to be at age variance or appearance with rest of the watch.

£320 is an okay price, assuming all is well with the watch and the fact that you got the discount you did is partly down to you and (probably) partly down to the fact that the case shape is not to everyone's taste.

Finally, although he specified 'no returns', he’s described it as 'in amazing condition' and a ‘tremendous watch', so if it’s not you can return it. Similarly, were it to be a redial, since he hasn’t disclosed it (if it is) you can again return it. That’s one of the good things about buying on eBay.

But it may well be a nice Omega at a good price, which you will like.

Let us know.

I would say redial.

The left "leg" of the logo doesn't seem that sharp. Also, notice how the gap between the O and M is much smaller than between the other letters. I have zoomed in below. Also the font of "Genève" looks too bold IMO.
