New member Richard L! - Now BANNED due to being a SCAMMER

So this scammer (The original poster) is now banned, he tried to hook some people PMing him offers on the watch and rip them off, someone identified that the photos were in fact stolen from this listing here, even though he swore that he took them himself recently:

https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art...pre-moon-speedmaster-ed-white-wrist_56172.htm

So the watch was never in his possession and this is a lesson to anyone that tries to scoop up these types of watches from blow-ins with no history or established identity.

Good catch !!

I think it’s just as much of a target as any others, but the 200 post rule and the closer knit element of this community keeps sharp eyes on new- comers. Of course we have had some very dedicated scammers dig in and make the commitment to invest in the community before enacting their plan (Trojan horse)- but those are isolated cases and get quickly exposed.

As for WR on the Speedy- they are not authorized for snorkeling.

I think the 200 post rule is sort of irrelevant in these cases. This is the “hey I’m a new member and my grandfather left me this old Zenith” post. Mysteriously the original poster is gone after 5 posts (whatever happened to the woman with the Wakmann?) and we never hear from them again. I feel like if people are PM’ing them it’s caveat emptor

Exactly! The 200 post guard rail goes out the window as soon as someone decides to go off-road.
Don’t go crying when you end up in a ditch.

I try not to be too much of a cynic but I'm always suspicious of the “hey I’m a new member and my grandfather left me this old Zenith” post, for the occasional very real temptation to PM the individual. The 200 post rule, although not infallible, works well and I'm glad its enforced.

I wonder how many PM’s were sent to the dude with the Alaska Speedy…I’m sure @dsio knows.

I'll admit I PM'd that guy who showed up with all that NOS stuff with the Minerva pocket watches. Shortly after I sent the PM I was like, wait a second... this is probably a bad idea.

That was another example of a hit & run. Did anyone get any of those? There were some really unrealistic ideas (probably perpetuated by the guy) about what that collection was worth

After a couple messages back and forth he responded that he had some family matters to focus on and couldn't deal with the watches for awhile. After my recent acquisition my wife will kill me if I buy another watch so it’s a moot point for me now.

I think most of us are safe from temptation if it’s a Zenith…

I could be dazzled by the pretty colors on a Rainbow chrono.

A good reminder to listen to your spidey sense when something seems off. It's hard to tell someone they are being shady. It's easier to say to yourself it'll be alright, I'm just being paranoid. This nice guy couldn't be a thieving asshole.

Glad no one was taken. High likelihood this guy has taken others though. An unfortunate reminder to me to stay vigilant.

I’m sure it’s a lot but we don’t have the time, nor would it be ethical or in some countries legal for us to monitor which is why your best judgement is required in these situations.

We can always check a person out to some degree if you think they’re suspicious or might not be who they claim to be and let us know, so if you’re ever concerned don’t hesitate to ask.
