Hi there, new member here with a SMQ!

I'm Ben from Germany and I bought this bad boy for a very low price from an Austrian eBay seller last week. It's a Seamaster Quartz Ref. 196.0116 with a Cal. 1342. According to the serial number the year of production is 1979. It runs great and looks like a solid B+ in terms of its condition. I opened it to check up on the movement and unfortunately it has a 392 battery (too tall?) in it, where as it should be (based on my research, in part also on this msg board) a 329 with an adapter ring. I have the ring and a 329 on its way to me already. But I still have a question... But let me show some photos first:

Now to my question: I asked about the correct battery on a German forum, and while a member there confirmed that the 329 is the correct one, he reported problems with this setup and said despite the adapter the battery still wouldn't fit and he had to get some soldering work done. I'm wondering now if that's normal, or if this was an odd case. Because based on my research this shouldn't be necessary. I know I'll know for sure when I get the ring and battery, but I'm still curious if others had similar issues, so I think asking this question on an international msg board make the most sense. 馃榾

Cheers
Ben

Welcome, Ben.
I dont have the same watch so take my comment with a grain of salt, but I didnt have an issue w/329 on a similar watch that used to use a 388 like this one (no more 388). Mine, like yours came w/the 392 and I switched it over w/no issue.

Thank you for the welcome.

I'll report back here how the swap went and whether it fit correctly... Good to hear you didn't experience any problems!

Adapter ring on the battery. Wow, that's interesting. Maybe the alternate battery is more widely available and superior?

Looks like you are enjoying the watch and the nato looks cool. I'm saving up for a grail so no fun toys for me. Two different paths.
Sometimes the original battery that would have been used is no longer available. Modern alternatives are used but maybe do not fit properly thus the need for an adapter ring. This is the case with the Omega TC1 for example. They have two big plastic spacers in them to accommodate the available replacement batteries.

Yes and no. The original battery was mercury-based and is now no longer available. The mercury batteries lasted at least a couple years maybe three, now lucky to get 12 months out of the current replacement.

Hi Ben!

The problem with my Seamaster 1345 occured while wearing it.
Sometimes it stopped from running and the expert I send the watch to told me there was some little gap between the 329 and the battery holder. He fixed it with some silver solder but no worries it`s completetley reversible:

Thince then no more problems.

Hey! Cool to see you here too. Didn't know you were on here as well...

I was actually going to ask you today about this on UF again. Haha!

So do you think that in your case it was "production tolerance" (i.e. the space for the battery being slightly bigger than others)?

Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben the world is a small place 馃榾

My Omega Quartz was very wrecked as I got it and Theo just done his magic on it and it came back to life as good as new or even better.
The 329 has the same height as the old 388 so that can`t be the reason and as the watch came into my possession the spacer was with the movement.
So I believe it was some coincident with the aging of the watch and to the fact that the former owner somehow "rocked" it hard.
But in the end there was a quite good solution and I think there`s nothing that you`re have to be worried about.

I see. Thanks for the explanation.

You know, it's less worrying and more simple curiosity, since I have some limited experience working on vehicles and a little more working with PCs and other tech gadgets, but working on precision mechanics such as watches are quite new to me (as you know from the UF board I swapped my first ever Quartz movement this year lol).

I'm still fascinated by so much complicated moving technology on such a tiny space.

Makes me realize I've worn watches so many years without really appreciating the amazing engineering kept within just a few millimeters...

Thank you sir!

Yes, I'm enjoying it a lot! This really got me hooked on the vintage train now, for sure!

I'm still somewhat undecided what my personal grail watch even is, so I'm enjoying the journey until I have to start saving for mine as well!

Nice watch! Almost bought one like this on Chrono 24 a few months ago, but the asking price was a tad bit too much.

Quick update: So shortly after the 329 and the adapter ring arrived, I of course had to have a horrible accident and spent almost a month in the hospital with 2 spinal surgeries. Now I'm home (surgeries were successful), but I'm kinda preoccupied with lots of other things now, so I won't be able to do the swap anytime soon. But eventually I will, and then I will report back here.

WTF?? OMG I hope you`re back on your feet quick!
All the best!

Hi, reporting back now. Finally!

I was super lucky after my accident last year. I recovered very quickly and have been virtually pain-free since last Winter!!! I've heard horror stories about botched surgeries et al., so it could have gone in the other direction as well.

Anyway, so earlier this year the watch stopped and it was time for a battery swap. Here's what happened: Once I could fit the battery inside the adapter ring it was a good fit. The 329 isn't as tall as the 392. I wish the previous owner hadn't forced it inside and not put a slight dent in the dial. But here's where I had a huge issue: Fitting the battery with the damn adapter ring. It turned out the ring is really a tad too tight for the battery, despite the fact that it was sold as a set and you'd think that they manufactured (or picked) a ring that's better fitted lol. Either way, after a few minutes of trying to force the adapter around the battery it finally worked. But it's far from being an easy solution.

A more cheerful update is that I extended my Omega collection with a modern watch: A new 3861 Hesalite Speedmaster last Monday! Hooray!
