No, because I'm not pedantic.

Thanks for clearing that up...

There was and it was removed because Canadian buyers had been burned by US sellers and had no recourse. They would go after the forum owner and there was nothing he could do to rectify the situations. He correctly decided to remove that section and bounce all non-Canada based sellers.

It’s his forum, so he can do what he wants. But I don’t think there’s anything he would be able to do to rectify the situation if a Canadian buyer was burned by a Canadian based seller, so...

If you want to see some of these vintages in person, Van Rijk in Toronto has, IMO the best collection in the city and the owner is quite reasonable when it's time to buy. Their website does not justify what they have in their store so I highly suggest you check them out; when lockdown is over of course.

Welcome. If you want vintage anything, go here for sure. I've never seen anything like it. Its like a trip thru a museum !

Feel free to post whatever you want over there...but it's a rather odd thing to say that because you aren't located in Canada, you are not Canadian...do you not agree?

No matter where I go, I will always be American!

Thanks all for the replies everyone. I appreciate the commentary and advice.

Going to look into Longines, Eterna, and probably some other stuff I missed.

If you want to learn about vintage watches, this is the place. Lots of very knowledgeable collectors from all over the world who are very generous with their expertise.

The banter is fun too. If you stick around you'll see a lot of others get a real rough ride. Be happy you got off easy LOL

But I don’t think

Apparently.

Quite the contrary Al. Bobby has helped Canadian buyers who have been cheated by Canadian sellers. Stop making assumptions when you clearly don't have any idea what you're talking about.

so...

So what?

I will also compliment Van Rijk on their inventory and Eric is a decent fellow, but their pricing is a bit, optimistic? Plus Eric has been in trouble in the past for "accidentally" switching out diamonds with glass while repairing or cleaning jewellery.

There's a shop in Grimsby called Harmony Jewellers and they have good inventory and many more items that are not on display. You need to talk with the owner and he can show you other items that aren't displayed.

I was suggesting the place to see a lot of fabulous vintage watches up close. And put them on your wrist ! I've spent lots of time in that store just looking. I sometimes wonder if they recognize me !

The only place I've ever seen a PP Nautilus in the flesh. In steel, steel/gold and solid gold. I don't know where he gets his inventory but ever since the first time I went there in 1995 it's like a museum for watch history.

And I should correct myself, his name is Erik, not Eric.

I'm also going to suggest checking out your local pages on Kijiji. Some scoff, but I've found some tremendous watches there.

Not sure why you are being quite so hostile...

Based on your style preferences, Certina would also be good to add to your list, as their DS and DS2 watches are well made and very robust.

I might have found the watch for me:

https://www.chrono24.ca/tudor/tudor-oyster-automatic-shock-resisting-951--id10976787.htm

A bit outside of my budget, but ticks boxes for the arabic numerals plus the extra second numbers. I am noticing that I prefer very slim blued hands as well. From a very brief search, ref 951 brings up this model as being from the 1940's rather than 60's - anyone have an idea about that?

I probably wouldn't purchase through C24 based on what others have said about the site, but again its a handy place to look.

That watch is worth about half the asking price, so it's actually in your budget. Possibly late 1940s, but more likely 1950s. There are also similar Tudor watches with hand-winding modified ETA movements, which might be a little more reliable and easier to maintain than the bumper.

Would it be outrageous to offer the seller half the price? What makes you say that? Just new and trying to learn, not questioning your judgement.

What does a bumper watch require in terms of maintenance? I know there are springs that bump on each end but that's about it. Thanks!

I say that because I know the real value, having bought them, sold them, and followed actual sales (not just listings). With experience and research, you will develop a better feeling for market valuation. Listings on C24 are often at outrageous asking prices, and they often stay listed for years. I doubt they would accept a fair offer. They are looking for suckers.

In any case, after looking more closely, that watch has a repainted dial and incorrect hands. It's actually not worth one-quarter of the asking price.

Since you seem new to this, I'm assuming that you may not have an ongoing relationship with an experienced watchmaker who frequently works on vintage watches. That's why I was suggesting that it might be better to stick with less obscure movements.

I love it, an honest assessment. No need to sugar coat it. I also know your invitation for additional questions and warm regards are heartfelt.
