Hi!
I finally put my hands on the 165.024 I dreamt of! I won it in an auction (probably overpaid it with those incredible buyer’s premium charges..) but the patina really « spoke » to me! 😁

I just received it and have nothing to open the caseback but from the (awful) auction pictures, it’s a 165024-64 HF case.
The extract dates it to 01/66 and the 1506/16 bracelet is etched 3 64.
I really have trouble assessing its level of polishing as my other 166.024 is a CB case and they look pretty different side by side.
Under UV light, everything (insert, dial and hands) light up and fade as awaited (and similarly). The dial, black is quite deep compared to my other one, and looks almost shiny

The pictures are far from amazing but daylight is falling quickly and the sun stayed hidden all day!

Congratulations! Among the 165/166.024 SM300 bezels, I personally love this B-type style fonts most and it is the hardest one to source in mint condition. The 1506/16 combo is sweet.

I like this bezel type too! That’s a thick font! 😁
This one has some small cracks but not altering the lume beneath.

This thread might help you:

From your pictures it doesn't look like this watch has ever seen a polishing wheel. However, it does look like someone gave it a "Once-over" (or as we call it; "The Jeweler's Special") with a Brillo pad...

Thanks! I actually found this thread earlier and it was very helpful, thanks a lot for the hard work!
I’ll take closer pictures of the case tomorrow 😀
Is it because the sides should have a brushed aspect, less shiny? Is it a bad thing? Is it worth correcting?

thanks again and merry Christmas!

Yes. The case sides and inner part of the lugs should be brushed along with the center section of the bracelet and end links.
The rest should be polished.

It is bad? Kinda, but there are definitely much worse examples out there.
This watch is overall very attractive and all original down to the end links.
I would not try to correct it, because the only way to do so (properly) is with a polishing wheel...
I would leave it as is.

looking at it closely, I can still faintly see the brushed finished, it’s definitely less shiny than the rest but not as obvious as what it’s supposed to be.

I also managed to open the caseback (it was almost loose!) to take pictures. The only engraved marking in the caseback is from 69 but I would be amazed if it had not been serviced since as it looks pretty clean and keeps accurate time. The gasket is in good condition too!

And finally, the sun came out and the dial looks great, almost glossy, it sparkles! 🥰

Yea if you're crippled with OCD. For most collectors this watch is a stellar example. Don't forget these things are over 50 years old and were worn for decades.

The last picture makes the dial pop! Also, the bezel is stunning, especially when considering that quite a few of them have not aged as gracefully..
Nice find

Looks great overall.

Regarding the polishing, is the crown side of the case as bad as it looks on picture 4, or is it a combination of bad lighting/angle?

Based on that picture alone someone's certainly had a good go at it. The 2oclock side looks like the profile may have been altered (again this may well just be the angle of the picture).

I see what you mean from that picture!
Actually, the edge is rather sharp but as the side is more shiny than what’s it’s supposed to be, the contrast is less visible. I tried to capture it better here :
