Why does the 321 have the box that the 1861 had?
One of the sweet mysteries of life. Most likely to show this was not a limited edition piece but a normal production item, and at the time of introduction the 'big box' was the standard Speedmaster box, hence the 321 got that box and the accessories that went with it. The new 3861 has the smaller kit but it would have been a little messy to downgrade the 321 box after they started using it when the 321 first came out. For some reason people complained about the larger box with the extra straps, springbars, loupe, booklets, and medallion, so Omega made the 3861 box smaller and simpler and probably saved themselves $50-100 per watch. Omega listened! They also listened to people complaining that there were too many LEs.
I’ll always say the big box is a giant waste. You buy the watch, look at all the stuff, and then put the box in a closet never to be seen again.
That's why it really makes no difference, it just gets put away. People fret that it takes up so much room but if the 321 box is pushing you out of your home you need to do some housekeeping. 😉
Ha!
For me, it's less about taking up space and more about being wasteful. At this point, I'll be happy with just a watch pouch like the NTTD Seamaster came in with a small shipping coffin.
