The problem is they already hit it out of the park decades ago, but the necessity of running a business dictates finding ways to sell new watches. A purist would say take one of the old designs and make it slightly better.

But marketing would say "how the heck will we sell the same thing that people didn't really buy decades ago? For way more money?"

So this design makes total sense, even if it is best viewed as an AT, not a Railmaster.

A relaunch of the "out of the park" railmaster with a matte black dial that has a similar texture to the new bronze gold SMP, but with these gradient dials as options, would probably have made sense. Classic, beautiful, slightly textured.

Seamaster Railmaster, dedicated 38 mm case, straight lugs and all brushed. That would make it clearly the little brother to the current Seamaster heritage.

Sigh... they should have done something special for the Railmaster, like magnetic resistance to 150 Tesla instead of only 15. I know I know, no one will experience a difference, but it would be a point that sets it apart from the AT. Because now it is just a "lowcost" AT with a matte dial and no date IMO.
I like your idea and I think it would be a useful marketing tool. Just as most people don't need a dive watch rated to 6000m, most don't need magnetic resistance to 150 Tesla. It's just nice for bragging rights and makes the watch a more interesting conversation piece. I'd make the whole watch antimagnetic as well, not just the movement. Maybe give it a titanium case with an all brushed bracelet? Then it becomes a true tool watch for engineers, scientists etc. One that you can safely wear near an MRI machine or power generators 😃

This. We need an MRI master; I've got someone in mind I could give one to as a gift.

Omega Seamaster Speedmaster Railmaster ... any more names ?
😆
.
I have a had long, and staggeringly expensive, chat with the marketing consultants.

They are really keen on "Land".

Actually it kind of works if you wanted to make a pure field watch. But then that ruins the joke.

What about Ranchero? Unfortunately Omega is nearly going to end in ridiculousness and by the way, what about the Spirate technology??? Did they give up???

I agree 100%…a major missed opportunity. Straight lugs, broad arrow hour hand, heck if they wanted, go with the sandwich dial of the SM300 and migrate the Railmaster from the Aqua Terra line to the Heritage Seamaster where it belongs and where it started in 1957.

Beautiful watches and very informative pics. I have the Trilogy SM300, and I was wondering how these would look in comparison. Just the right size, as I thought. Which did you prefer?

I’m really liking the ‘Ranchero’ Railmaster😉 with the beige gradient dial!😍

I'd have to agree - it has a bit more ... not sure what, exactly, but something ... that color really works. That said, I think I'd pop for the gray one myself - it looks really easy to read. Thanks for posting the photos!

Definitely looks way better in these pictures than in any of omega's press release pictures, as usual

Thanks @Mach

More mockups because I enjoy doing them. Below is the actual gen 4, exactly as Omega designed it, except with a no gradient black dial:

And below is what it would look like if the gen 4 had taken more inspiration from previous gens. This is the gen 3 case and bracelet coupled with a modernised version of the gen 2 dial layout. I didn't bother mocking up an alternate hand set this time, but you can see an older pre-release mockup I made of a broad arrow version with less accurate lume/indices here.

IMO the second mockup is by far the best, but then I would say that wouldn't I - it's basically just a direct update to the gen 2 Railmaster. 😜

I think I need to head down to the local Omega Boutique to see these in person, because the pictures I'm seeing all over Reddit actually look really, really nice. It's a very subtle and understated gradient, both colors work pretty well for a very different reasons. I don't think it's a size that I would ever wear but that gray and black is really beginning to grow on me.

Both of those are more appealing to me than the actually pieces….nice job…,fun!

Different strokes: I prefer the actual release to these mockups. (Which is not to impugn the creator’s stunning mockup skills!!!)

I’d see a release like the mockup as too close to the Rolex Explorer I. The actual releases strike me as more aesthetically innovative (albeit the brown one has some Hamilton vibes, but in a good way). And the 38mm case is to be celebrated, especially if it heralds the continuing death of the gigantic-watch fad.

One can honor the past without imitating it.

Same with the last Railmaster release. I had no interest in the denim dial until I tried it on at an AD. Even then I needed to take it to their front door (under the watchful eye of their security 😅) to see it in sunlight. Loved it from then on.

Visit to the local ‘Bahston’ Boutique to see the new Railmasters:

Omega going with just Railmaster on the dial was a good call. The cleaner dial makes more sense in your wrist shots than their promo photos.
