Need help with a birth-year Speedmaster

Hi All,

New member here. I'm considering a birth-year Speedmaster.

https://ashton-blakey-antiques.com/...dmaster-professional-145-022-78-st-moon-watch

The thing is my birthyear is 1979 and it looks like the 78 model rolled into 79 and you can only really tell when the watch was produced by a serial number related on the movement, and even then it may be a guess related to how production may have progressed. Is this true? I can't go for it and have it turn out to be from 1980, or 78 - no offence to my peers. Can anyone educate me a bit?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has some advice.

Zachary

Yes, this is true. You would need to purchase an Extract of the Archives to know for sure. Maybe you can just get over the whole birth-year thing.

Thanks so much for this super helpful info! It's amazing how in depth the sleuthing can become. I'm not sure what I'll do with this particular watch. In fact, I might just buy a brand new hesalite from the local boutique and save my vintage watch seeking for something that just really catches my eye in person. I really appreciate the support of the forum. I'll let you know if I do go for it.

best,
Zachary
